Issues with Desktop & Taskbar Notification Area + BSODs - Windows 8.1

re: Issues with Desktop & Taskbar Notification Area - Windows 8.1

If this doesn't fix things, we'll move the topic over to the BSOD forums.

1)
AMD OverDrive (AODDriver2.sys) is either a stand-alone application, or a component of the AMD VISION Engine Control Center. This driver is known to cause BSOD's on some Windows systems.
NOTE: these symptoms were from the previous release of OverDrive. The new release uses the same driver name, but is dated from 4 November 2013.
Please un-install all AMD/ATI video stuff from Control Panel...Programs...Un-install a program
Then, download (but DO NOT install) a fresh copy of the ATI drivers from Global Provider of Innovative Graphics, Processors and Media Solutions | AMD (in the upper right corner of the page)
Use this procedure to install the DRIVER ONLY: ATI video cards - DRIVER ONLY installation procedure - Sysnative Forums

If the device (AODDriver or AODDriver4.01) remains a problem, open Device Manager, select the "View" item.
Then select "Show hidden devices" and scroll down to the Non-Plug and Play Drivers section.
Locate the AODDriver entry, right click on it and select "Un-install". Reboot for changes to take affect.
Sometimes the driver remains and continues to cause BSOD's. If this is the case for you, post back and we'll give further instructions for safely removing it.

If overclocking, please stop. Remove the overclock and return the system to stock/standard values while we're troubleshooting. Once the system is stable again, feel free to resume the overclocking.

2) Uninstall the Logitech software (temporarily) - as it dates from 2009
See if that helps. Feel free to reinstall the latest, Win8.1 compatible version of the Logitech software after the system has been stabilized

3) Remove the Logitech devices and test with other devices (such as a standard PS2/USB mouse and keyboard.

Thanks Usama -- will test this when I get home from work. :) I figured it either had to do with the GPU or the hard drive being wonky. Have never had a problem with BSODs in games, like WoW, Borderlands 2, Skyrim, Diablo 3, etc. Very strange. Must be using a different function of the GPU to transcode media or something? I'm no expect -- you guys are, so I'll see it that works :)

re: Issues with Desktop & Taskbar Notification Area - Windows 8.1

That driver change unfortunately did not work. I honestly thought it did, as it held out stream for a solid hour... but I got another BSOD. I have attached the minidump file from last night's occurrence, and perhaps this should be moved to the BSOD forum.

Thanks so much!

re: Issues with Desktop & Taskbar Notification Area - Windows 8.1

Moving this over to the BSOD forums.......
I'm late for work and will try to get back to this this afternoon.

If another analyst comes along in the meantime, the initial BSOD's that I analyzed were STOP 0x124's

Please provide this information so we can provide a complete analysis: https://www.sysnative.com/forums/bs...ctions-windows-8-1-8-7-and-windows-vista.html

Please start with these free diagnostics: Hardware Diagnostics

Is it possible to test without the Roku box (and the Plex server) attached?
If possible, that may help to determine the device that's causing this (it's most likely a hardware problem, but could be due to other drivers.

Also, you may want to try Driver Verifier according to these instructions: Driver Verifier Settings
Although this isn't normally used with the STOP 0x124 errors - I've seen it work once or twice before.

So far:
Ruled out the memory -- memtest came back with zero errors after 2 full passes.
I'll get the other information done for you this evening when I get a chance. :) Thanks.

Re: Issues with Desktop & Taskbar Notification Area - Windows 8.1

Attached the first BSOD file as requested --

Perfmon /report gives me an issue when attempting the process below:

3. Run PERFMON System Health Report -
START | type perfmon /report | save as HTML file

This is what I get:

Code:
"An error occurred when attempting to generate the report".

Lot's of Live Kernel Events in the WER section of MSINFO32.
Along with the STOP 0x124 memory dumps, this tends to suggest a hardware problem.

Please do the following:
- open Event Viewer (run eventvwr.msc from the "Run" dialog))
- expand the Custom Views category (left click on the > next to the words "Custom Views")
- right click on Administrative Events
- select "Save all Events in Custom View as..."
- save the file as Admin.evtx
- zip up the file (right click on it, select "Send to", select "Compressed (zipped) folder")
- upload it with your next post (if it's too big, then upload it to a free file-hosting service and post a link here).

While waiting for a reply, please monitor your temps with this free utility: HWMonitor CPUID - System & hardware benchmark, monitoring, reporting

There was an video error back in Dec of 2013 and there was an NMgamingms.sys error in Feb of 2014. These are the things we'll check first.
Please uninstall the mouse software that came with your system. Temporarily use the Windows drivers for the mouse to see if that fixes the problems.

Also, please update the video drivers - and run the Video tests from the hardware diagnostics that I suggested earlier ( Hardware Diagnostics )

Had a funny issue with the event viewer and the most recent Windows 8.1 update and hate to delete a registry value. Here's a link if anyone gets the same issue with Event Viewer not working with 8.1: Rage3D Discussion Area

Anyways, attached is the Admin.evtx -- most recent dump restart was at 6:31PM last night (my girls tried to turn on Dolphin Tale through Plex.

I don't think we'll be able to test this without Plex, because I'm not having an issue when it's not related to Plex. I've been able to use the files locally, via XBMC or directly, it just seems to be explicitly when using the Plex to a remote Roku. I'll test watch Plex via mobile today.

I had previously looked at CPU and GPU temps via Speccy, and while they do get mildly warm when transcoding over to the Roku, that process usually cools down, and it gets nowhere near max temps at all.

I'm running Furmark now.

I'm starting to believe it's something to do directly with my GPU -- which I was going to replace anyways soonView attachment Admin.zip. Would it be safe to assume it's GPU related at this point?

I didn't find anything significant in the Admin log file.

Still getting STOP 0x124 errors.
I think swapping video cards is a good idea (even though you've passed the stress tests)
If you have to buy one, be sure that you purchase it form a shop that accepts returns - that way you'll be able to get your money back if it doesn't work.

Beyond that, I'm fairly sure that we've ruled out hardware problems.
This suggests, to me, that we've got a compatibility problem (I usually wonder about this when seeing hal.dll in the stack text).
I'm really not that familiar with Roku or Plex - and I think you'll need someone more familiar with this.
Most of my internet searches point to the roku forums - so you may want to try there.

Please update these older drivers. Links are included to assist in looking up the source of the drivers. If unable to find an update, please remove (un-install) the program responsible for that driver. DO NOT manually delete/rename the driver as it may make the system unbootable! :
