Just Bought A Surface!

Indeed - I also hope there's a modern version of Office for vNext. It's a bit difficult if there's a need for supporting older platforms, though, and if Office vNext ships before or around January of 2015 (and thus would likely contain support for Windows 7), that may be tough to do with all of the main apps. If it ships more than 2 years from now, though, perhaps we could see a modern version of Office.... here's hoping ;).

I agree. I just always wondered why they didn't have at least some from the office suite in the store if they want to promote apps there. I would definitely use it 100% of the time, over these desktop versions while on the Surface, while on my desktop I would always use the desktop versions. Time will tell :)

I believe it's mostly due to Windows 7 support. Given Office isn't really based on .NET, getting a version that works in both modern and desktop would be a big deal (I doubt it'd be able to be one codebase at that point, and building and supporting 2 different products that do the same thing might be cool, but isn't a wise use of resources) was probably bigger than they were able or willing to do before the Windows 8 release. Thankfully it has a touch mode and works well in the desktop environment, but it would indeed be really cool to have the apps available from the modern interface.

Well, if you want to run a desktop app on RT, you have to contact Microsoft and get a license from them to do so, as only applications signed by Microsoft (and it appears, meeting a few other criteria as well) will run in the desktop on RT. As a hacker, I'm not sure what you'd need to do to get a non-signed app to run from any location, but especially protected locations. You can bet Microsoft isn't going to be publishing that info ;).

If I figure it out then should I not be posting my solutions around then if Microsoft wouldn't be posting about it themselves? With some time I'm thinking i'm capable of figuring this out :) I'd just like to not be going against any terms of use in doing so though... But since information about this whole thing seems scarce at this point, that "fine line" is a little blurry I must say.

I will say why I would want this though. I manage a VB.net programming school and to efficiently manage users, I have developed an app in C# that will keep track of the project I have assigned to each user, where they are at in terms of progress, as well as a few other details including when their next project is due. It would be nice to have this app on a more "portable" device , and I don't like carrying around a laptop.

(EDIT: Before anyone suggests, lol no, I can't spend the time to recreate this entire app as an ARM based Win8 store app just for myself. Although that raises an interesting question too that I will have to take a look at later today. Can you move WPF/XAML or Win8 apps over via USB for example and run them on a Surface if the system disallows you from running desktop apps or is that only applicable to desktop apps? I know apps downloaded DIRECTLY from the store work fine...)

If I can't then I cant run any of my custom apps on this thing, Windows store apps or desktop apps. My store account I couldn't get the payment method validated from a few issues, so I can't have anything in the store just yet.

Thankyou again for the prompt response cluberti :thumbsup2: I may hold off on asking Microsoft for a license on that part though as I have my doubts that they would have interest for making an exception just for me for no reason.

A jailbroken RT device... Haha, I haven't heard of that before, but i'll give that page a read from your recommendation over the course of this week to see what it's all about :)
