That were going to be my next instructions :) Let me know if it works.
OK, I replaced a missing (?) winre.wim and retried the upgrade. Now I get: "We can't tell if your PC has enough space to continue installing Windows 10. Try restarting Setup." Huh? I have 850 GB free. Do setup logs show anything?

BCD Error. Your BCD is corrupt and has to be recreated.
Update: I'm still stuck on creating the recovery drive. I needed a 16GB USB and had to buy one. I bought a 32GB SanDisk. And guess what - Create a Recovery Drive doesn't recognize it. It could be the issue described here: Recovery Drive for Windows 10 Doesn't Recognize USB Drive - Microsoft Community. Come on, Microsoft!
In any case, I haven't given up. I'll try this path over the holidays.

Try putting one of them into NTFS.
