I'll give it a go. It's hard to know exactly when it will fail, sometimes it takes many minutes, sometimes much shorter.

When I scan my computer with AVG Anti virus, it gives a message that it has found a number of issues, amongst them problems in the registry.
Is it worth letting AVG try and fix them automatically, or is that likely to cause more trouble than it solves?

No, do not use these tools under any circumstances:

Step 1 - Replace DRIVERS Hive Manually

Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.

  1. Download DRIVERS.ZIP and save to your desktop.
  2. Right-click on it and select Extract all.... Make sure the "Show extracted files when complete" is checked and click Extract.
  3. Now we have the DRIVERS file that we will be using to replace your current one.
  4. Navigate to C:\Windows\System32\config
  5. Right-click on the current DRIVERS file and select rename. Rename it to DRIVERS.bad.
Note: If you get an error that the file is in use, reboot your computer and then try again.
  6. Take the file from the DRIVERS folder on your desktop and paste it into C:\Windows\System32\config

Step 2 - DISM /RestoreHealth Scan

  1. Right-click on the Start button and select Command Prompt (Admin)
  2. When command prompt opens, Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Right-click > Paste) the following command into it, then press Enter

    Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

  3. When DISM finishes scanning your component store, zip up and attach your CBS log to your next post:

    C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log

Great! Do the following again:

1. Download the Media Creation Tool and save this to your desktop. Go ahead and run this as well. Note: Click the Download tool now button when you get to this link.
2. Accept the License Agreement
3. Download the ISO file to your desktop.
4. Double-click on the ISO and then run the setup to try and upgrade your machine.

We want to get the ISO so that you don't have to keep downloading which can take hours.

I can use the ISO i created yesterday, or should I do it from the start?
Then when I start the update process, there are two choices:
  • Download and install updates (recommended)
  • Not right now
Which should I choose now?

Oh, right, you have the iso already. Then just open that iso and run setup.exe. The upgrade should work now.

Then when I start the update process, there are two choices:

  • Download and install updates (recommended)
  • Not right now

Which should I choose?

I don't know how you did it, and if you told me I probably wouldn't understand, but you seem to have solved my problems.
My computer has refreshed, restarted, and updated, all seemingly without any trouble at all.
A thousand thanks to you, for your skill, dedication and perseverance!
Do you walk around town in a cape and mask? You should do, you are a HERO!
