Install Update with DISM

  1. Download the update MSU here: http://download.windowsupdate.com/c..._8bc6befc7b3c51f94ae70b8d1d9a249bb4b5e108.msu
  2. Copy the MSU file to a convenient location (such as C:\temp).
  3. Click on the Start
    Start%20Orb.jpg
button and in the search box, type Command Prompt
  4. When you see Command Prompt on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator
  5. When command prompt opens, copy and paste the following commands into it, press enter after each

    cd C:\temp

replace C:\temp with your path if different

    expand {update name}.msu -f:* C:\temp

replace {update name} with the name of the MSU file downloaded in step 1

    DISM.exe /Online /Add-Package /PackagePath:C:\temp\{update name}.cab

  6. You should receive the message:
    The operation completed successfully.
  7. Make sure to allow the computer to restart if prompted.

If you receive any other message:
  8. Right-click on the Command Prompt window and click Select All, this will invert all of the colours by selecting the text, now press enter. All of this text is now copied.
  9. Paste (Ctrl+V) it into your next post please.
  10. Zip and attach C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log

Thanks. I'm starting a webinar shortly so I'll provide those logs immediately following. But to answer your question, the only thing I can think of is that two days ago I spent an entire morning trying to fix my printer - driver mismatches, reinstalling drivers...Could that be it? I did run Tweaking.com repairs, could that be it? Could it have been the botched attempt to install the latest Windows 10 Cumulative Update from this week? Something to do with Avira? I keep up with the latest updates of my Flash, Java, Avira, Malwarebytes, Dell drivers...I haven't downloaded any sketchy programs, my Avira and Malwarebytes don't turn up anything, and I haven't incorrectly shut down my computer. Can you speculate as to what could have caused this so soon after things were clean?

It could have been the failed cumulative update, a lot of changes are made during the installation.

Looks like this is from KB3213986. Let's try installing that update first.

http://download.windowsupdate.com/d..._a1f5adacc28b56d7728c92e318d6596d9072aec4.msu

I would recommend using the C:\Temp\ directory for the MSU and CAB files rather than C:\Windows\System32 if possible, as you will want to clean the large CAB and MSU files up once everything is working.
(if the temp folder doesn't exist you can create it)

Also, the name of the cab file omits the hash that is present in the MSU name.
For example with this update, the commands would be:

expand C:\temp\windows10.0-kb3213986-x64_a1f5adacc28b56d7728c92e318d6596d9072aec4.msu -f:* C:\temp\

then

dism /online /add-package /packagepath=C:\temp\windows10.0-kb3213986-x64.cab

How do I change the starting path of my admin command prompt from something other than System 32?

You can use the CD (change directory) command.

at the

C:\Windows\System32>

prompt you can type 'cd C:\temp' (without the quotes), then press enter and the prompt should change to

C:\temp>

In that case it may be simplest to perform an in-place-upgrade - that process will repair all the problems at once rather than individually applying parts of updates.

Visit this page: Windows 10
On that page, click the blue 'Download Tool Now' button. Save the file, then run it.

In Windows 10 Setup, choose 'Upgrade this PC now'.
On the 'Get important updates' page, choose 'not right now'.
If prompted, choose 'keep personal files and apps'.

If the installation fails, zip and attach C:\Windows.~bt\Sources\Panther\SetupAct.log with your reply.

That makes sense. I just Microsoft would get their crap together. I'm going offline for the next few hours but I'll tackle it tonight EST. About how long does it take, roughly?

Also, I looked for the option to not let Microsoft automatically install updates but can't locate it. Can you tell me where I can find it?

And before I forget...how can I PayPal you guys a donation?

Thanks again for all of your assistance - I really appreciate it.

Microsoft has hidden that option, it would require running services.msc, then in that window, right click on the Windows Update service and choose properties.
In the properties dialogue, change the startup type to Disabled, then click OK.

The download time varies depending on your internet speed (usually about 4GB), the installation itself can be rather quick - on most of my machines it has been less than an hour.

As always, glad to help! I'll wait to hear back from you.

OK I think it worked. Except for the fact that I was not offered the option of "not right now" as far as letting updates install, it just went ahead and installed them, so hopefully that in and of itself didn't cause corruption yet again.

One problem is that it reverted Windows Defender to the default automatic startup and will not let me stop it (it's greyed out in Services). I went into WD and manually turned it off but it said if it's off for a while they'll turn it back on again. Like I said, I have Avira. How can I stop WD and "ungrey" both the service status options and the startup type?

Other than turning WD off, I haven't touched anything else. Let me know if you want me to run SFC /scannow and DISM again to ensure all corruption is gone and if there are other things I should check on to make sure they work that could've been affected by the repair upgrade.

Thanks again

Also, would it make sense for me to send you my Event Viewer to review? I just need to make 100% sure that all of the errors showing up are benign and can be ignored.

To turn off Windows Defender (since you have Avira :) ) run registry editor (regedit) then browse to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows Defender

There will be a value with the name DisableAntiSpyware, double click on it, then change the value from 0 to 1.
Click OK and restart your computer.

Verify that Windows Defender doesn't start.

Since your disk is healthy, I think it might be a good idea to verify that bad RAM isn't causing troubles with Windows Update.
  • Click Start, type mdsched.exe in the Search box, and then press Enter.
  • Choose whether to restart the computer and run the tool immediately or schedule the tool to run at the next restart.
  • Windows Memory Diagnostics runs automatically after the computer restarts and performs a standard memory test automatically.
  • When testing is completed, the computer restarts automatically. You’ll see the test results when you log on.

Let me know if any problems are reported.

"Cannot edit DisableAntiSpyware: Error writing the value's new contents." This concerns me.

There was no report when I logged on but I watched the tests complete and it said no problems found.

Sorry about that, you may have to restart Windows into safe mode to edit that entry. I just tried it with the same result on my machine.

Excellent, glad to hear that memory isn't a problem. Let's verify that SFC doesn't find any issues.

SFC Scan

  1. Click on the Start
    Start%20Orb.jpg
button and in the search box, type Command Prompt
  2. When you see Command Prompt on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator
  3. When command prompt opens, copy and paste the following commands into it, press enter after each

    sfc /scannow

Wait for this to finish before you continue

    copy %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log %userprofile%\Desktop\cbs.txt

  4. This will create a file, cbs.txt on your Desktop. Please zip and attach this to your next post.

cbs.txt - Google Drive

SRP found no integrity violations but there seem to be a lot of errors in the log which I cannot understand for the life of me why they are there - benign or not - when I just did a repair upgrade.

Re: WD, when I went into safe mode, I got the exact same error message.

Thanks again

I just wanted to add that, for the heck of it, I ran Windows 10 Troubleshooters for Windows Update and Windows Store Apps. I don't put much stock in them but, for what it's worth, I get the same error messages I've gotten in the past: WU says service registration is corrupt, BITS says service registration is corrupt, and WSA says store cache is damaged.

Also, my Event Viewer has over 600 errors under Administrative Events. The one I see most is Event ID 16 "Error while updating status to SECURITY_PRODUCT_STATE_ON (error 2000000). Would you know happen to know what it means? Many DCOM errors as well.

Yes, the log looks good :)
Those messages are just informational - anything that was an actual error would look something like:

yyyy-mm-dd hh:mm:ss, Error CSI {message} [error code]

You might want to try uninstalling and reinstalling the latest version of Avira, I believe they do turn Windows Defender off as part of the installation process.
