[SOLVED] Need Help With SFC-Corrupt Files

Let Me Know if that is what you needed...Also, do you think the corruption may have been caused by the power outage when I was Removing IE8 from my computer....However, it did sit in the sign out screen (saying "Stage 3 of 3 0%--Please do not turn off your computer) for over 3 hours...???

I will have a look and report back.

No Problem Richard, Take all the time you need, i really appreciate all the effort your putting into this...One last question...Do you think maybe System File Checker Itself might be corrupt??? I remember reading a post onn your site, that a woman had written a program called something like SFC Fix, a program that would fix a corrupted System File Checker that was marking files as corrupt that actually were'nt???

Thanks. I will be back tomorrow, as it is getting late here.

It is unlikely that SFC itself is corrupt. What I think is happening is that it is being passed incorrect data, and off the back of that, it is making mistakes. We just need to find and fix the bad data.

SFCFix helps fix the bad data, but only under instruction (i.e. I must manually tell it what changes to make). At the moment, I haven't yet fully tracked down the bad data, so can't tell SFCFix what to do, so we can't use it yet.

Richard;
You Are The Bomb..:thumbsup2: Thanks for all the hard work you'r putting into this...Sorry, forgive me, I keep forgeting your 5 hrs ahead of me, as I am just excited as to the possibility of you perhaps being able to fix this...Talk to you soon....Bobster52

Hello again :)

Thank you again for your patience. I have now planned out a fix. It is a multi-step fix, so you may not notice any immediate improvement after just this post, but each stage is a step in the right direction.

Curiously enough, your problems are actually the result of having too many files and registry keys. Please do not be concerned that my fix primarily involves deleting. Trust me on this.

Navigate to the C:\Windows\winsxs\amd64_microsoft-windows-wdf-kernellibrary-mof_31bf3856ad364e35_6.0.6000.16386_none_dc45512ad6c94be5\ folder, right click on it and select Properties.
Under the Security tab, click Advanced.
Under the Owner tab, click Edit.
Click "Other Users and Groups".
Click Advanced.
Click "Find Now".
Scroll down and double click on Everyone.
Click OK THREE times.
Click on the Permissions tab.
Under type Deny, single click on it and click Remove.
Click OK.
Click Edit (now on the standard file Property window under the Security tab).
Click Add.
Click Advanced.
Click "Find Now".
Scroll down and double click on Everyone.
Click OK.
Single click on Everyone and then tick the "Full Control" box under Allow.
Click OK TWO times.

Now, I want you to right click on it (C:\Windows\winsxs\amd64_microsoft-windows-wdf-kernellibrary-mof_31bf3856ad364e35_6.0.6000.16386_none_dc45512ad6c94be5) again, and delete it.

Then please re-run SFC, and upload a new CBS.log. As I said earlier, I do not expect any sudden improvements yet, but we are working towards that.

Hi Richard;
Just got in...Got your e-mail...Copied it and will follow your directions...Give me a few minutes to complete and I will get you a new cbs file...Thanks
Bobster---Love you Man!!!!:thumbsup2:

Richard...having a problem....Got to scroll down and double click on "Everyone" opens a box Select user or group Clicking ok 3 times takes me back to the security box????I Dont see any Denys checked in the collums....???

Lets start From the "Select User Or Group " Box Which now says Everyone In the box Under The "Enter object name to select"...Clicking ok makes that box disapear...Takes me to the owner box, which now says Current owner Everyone-----Clicking ok (3rd OK) on that box takes me to the other owners box, where it says-current owner Everyone--Under that says change owner to Bobby (Bobs-Toy\Bobby)-----------If I click on Effective Permissions---Only get a blank box For "Group or user name" then a box select...What am I doing wrong????

Hi Richard;
As usual, I think I figured it out, sorry it took so long...I was getting frustrated when getting to the "Click 3 times" part...As you can see from my posts...Then I figured what you wanted was to Add "Everyone" into the permissions control box under security, and then grant "Everyone" full control....Hope I'm correct in my assumption...What was peculiar, was that in any of the permission control boxes, there was no "Deny", only "Allows"...So I added Everyone to the Permission box, and gave it full control...At The end when I clicked OK, I got an alert box...Something to the effect, that I was going to change the properties for all the system files and did I want to continue??? Yes...Then I got some kind of error had occured warning box--It went away...I closed out, went back to winsxs and deleated the file... left it in the recycle bin just in-case you needed it again, or (If I did something wrong)...I sent a compressed file to the desktop and labeled it CBS Before Reboot, because when I ran SFC it said "Changes would take effect after reboot...And another--CBS After Reboot...When the pute was rebooting, in the sign off screen, I got the message "Configuring Updates...After Reboot I went back to the winsxs folder to see if windows recreated the folder...It did not...
Hope you got home in time to get some sleep tonight, you've really been burning the candle for the past week, I really do appreciate all the hard work...Oh, let me attach those files before I forget...Talk to you soon...Bobster52

You have done amazingly, once again :) Hopefully this next post should be slightly less strenuous.

The thing about deny entries was purely on an "if you had any" basis. If there were any, they needed removing. If there weren't any, then you could proceed. Sorry for not making this clear. But you managed admirably, once again :)

Just click on the links to view the images. Please let me know if you can't view the images at all - they make the process a lot easier!)

Click Start > Search for regedit > right click on regedit.exe > select Run as Administrator

Expand HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, and look for a subkey called COMPONENTS

If you find it, jump to part one of the fix. If you do not find it, you must make it appear:

Single click on HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE,

go to the File Menu > Load Hive... > navigate to C:\Windows\System32\config > select the COMPONENTS file (the one without a file extension - i.e. NOT COMPONENTS.log or similar, just COMPONENTS >

Click Open > Give it a key name of COMPONENTS > OK.

Now it should appear as in the first screenshot.

Now, please download and import the attached registry script (double and open the .zip file, double click on the contained .reg file, select Yes to import data, click OK)

Finally, please re-run SFC, and one more CBS log. Hopefully this is fix part 2 of 3. Hopefully nearly done.

Good Morning Richard;
Could'nt sleep over the excitment of getting this fixed....Soooo, I followed your directions, the componet folder was already in regedit, so I clicked on it and downloaded "the fix" folder, extracted it to the desktop, doubleclicked on it, and then got a warning box, something about trust, and did I want to continue, clicked yes, did'nt see anything about "Importing" but did get a message to the effect that "the file has been added to your regestery"....Did a little checking to see if I did it right by expanding "Componets", scrolled down to "Servicing Stack Version" opened it up and found 2 entries that seem to be dated today....They are--

ab--6.06002.1800 5-0 Reg_Sz 2012/12/18:6:4:24.7746.0.6002.18005 (lh_Sp2rtm.09...) &
ab--Last WCP Version Reg_Sz 6.0.6000.18005_0028c5a9

Hope this is what you'r looking for...Did a SFC, said it found errors and fixed them, so rebooted and saved you a copy of before and after, will upload in a second...Forgot to deleate the old logs, sorry for the extra reading...One quick question Richard...Yesterday, you had me grant everyone permission on that winsxs file, was that so it could be deleted??? Just being nosey...I'm learning a-lot here...N-E-Way...heres those files...

Morning Richard; Did you get my last post?? Did I do the import correctly, and did it show up in the CBS Files??

You did it perfectly, once again :)

You are doing absolutely incredibly. This stuff is really hard.

About the WinSxS stuff. You are exactly right. I had to grant permissions on the file purely so that I could delete it. One of the main reasons for this is to prevent accidental deletions. If you accidentally press the delete key on a Windows file, it will not be deleted. You have to go through all those steps I showed you. You wouldn't do that accidentally. There are some other reasons also, it helps with keeping your computer secure. Feel free to ask as many questions as you like/have. I always positively encourage questions, so please don't hesitate to ask.

Now, fingers crossed, this is the fix which should fix it. We shall see.

Afterwards, there will be a little tidying up for us to do. There may well be new errors reported. This does not concern me, as I know what is going on. But what I am really, really hoping for is that the error changes, rather than remaining unchanged. That is the good news we are looking out for.

Exactly as last time, please download and import this registry fix. Then, and I think you know the procedure now, please re-run SFC, and a new CBS.log.

Thank you for your patience.

Richard

There is no need to worry about that at all this time. It will be fine without doing anything. :)

Hey Richard;
I Can't begin to tell you how much I appreciate all this....N-E-Way, I downloaded the fix, opened up the registry under admin., double clicked, was told it was added, checked in the servicing stack file, found an entry with todays date on it, closed everything out...Emptied everything from the CBS file, ran SFC....When it was done, said it found corrupt files and fixed them, I did'nt think it said anything about taking effect after reboot, but not sure, (again---1/2 Polish:confused2:), so i rebooted againand have enclosed before & after files again...Let me know what you nfind....Thanks, Bobby

Afternoon Richard;
While I was waiting to hear the news, I decided to run another SFC....This time it found corrupt files & fixed them, and said the repair process would be complete after reboot, so I did that and sent you a copy of the CBS file, may be the same as the last two I uploaded...Before reboot the logging ended at "POQ 127 Ends"... Quite a bit more after, No wonder it takes time to digest that whole log, don't know how you do it, just really glad you do...Did notice somewhere in there, there was a reference to that file we deleted a while back...N-E-Way, going to make a pot of coffee, and have some breakfast, let me know what you find.....Hope its good news....Thanks...Bobster52

By the way...How do you delete the folders from the "Upload window" box???
