Need help with virus removal - (MindSpark ?)

I see you were comfortable removing everything that was found. Looking at the items, I agree. Let's see if JRT finds anything else and then I'd like to take a look at a fresh log.

Please download Junkware Removal Tool to your desktop.
  • Disable your protection software now to avoid potential conflicts.
  • Run the tool by double-clicking it. If you are using Windows Vista or Seven, right-mouse click it and select "Run as Administrator".
  • The tool will open and start scanning your system.
  • Please be patient as this can take a while to complete depending on your system's specifications.
  • On completion, a log (JRT.txt) is saved to your desktop and will automatically open.
  • Post the contents of JRT.txt into your next message.

Please provide a fresh DDS log, although this time, I only need to see DDS.txt
  • Double-click dds.scr to run.
  • Copy the contents of only DDS.txt & post in your next reply

Err....., well..... Not sure if I was actually comfortable but more I didn't read your instructions thoroughly enough....lol. Sounds like it was ok....

Ok - here is the next ones:

Not to worry, haganm. If something had been removed that was needed, we could have restored it. There are still some "orphans" that I'd like to take care of as well as one more check.

Please follow these instructions carefully. Download ComboFix from the following location: Link 1

!!! IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • Disable your antivirus and anti-malware security applications. If not disabled, these programs will likely interfere with cleanup process. This can usually be accomplished by a right-click on the icon in the System Tray.

Note: If you are unsure how to disable your security software, see the instructions in this topic at Tech Support Forum: How to disable your security applications.
  • If infections are found, ComboFix will automatically reboot the machine to complete the removal process. Please ensure all opened windows are closed before proceeding.
  • Double-click ComboFix.exe on your desktop and follow the prompts.
  • Your desktop may go blank. This is normal. It will return when ComboFix is done. ComboFix may reboot your machine. This is normal.
  • When finished, a log will be produced. Please copy C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Hi Corrine,
Ran ComboFix but it seems to be "stuck".

It has completed all the way to Stage 41 but it has been at this point for over 40 minutes. Should I restart?

Thanks,
Mark

Hi, Mark.

There are circumstances ComboFix will hang, crash or stall at various stages. Please try this:

Open Task Manager and look for the following ComboFix related processes (some have a .3XE extension):

PEV.exe
NirCmd.3XE
PEV.3XE
SED
GREP
any file that has the extension *.3XE

One at a time, right-click and select End Process. If doing that does not free ComboFix, then you will need to reboot the computer manually.

Thank Corrine - I'll wait as it just went to Stage 42......after 45 minutes. If it does get stuck again, I'll try the steps you provided. Thanks again for all your help!!
Mark

Hopefully it will finish. If not, we can go another route. Since it is getting late, I'll check tomorrow to find out how it went. (Fingers crossed)

Hi Corrine,
Very strange. When I went to bed, it had completed through Stage 42. When I got up this morning, it had completed through Stage 43. I decided to wait a bit to see if it was actually stuck this time. However, now after 3 additional hours, it has completed through Stage 48. When been at this 48 stage now for nearly 1 1/2 hrs.

Do you know how many Stages there are? Should I continue to wait it out or follow your steps from the previous post?

Thanks!!
Mark

Hi, Mark. Since it hasn't finished by now, go ahead and follow the steps from my earlier post.

Of course I just realized that I forgot to provide the instructions to download an alternate tool so we can double-check things and remove any left-overs.

Please download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your Desktop.

Note: You need to run the version compatible with your system. If you are not sure which version applies to your system download both of them and try to run them. Only one of them will run on your system, that will be the right version.
  • Right click to run as administrator. When the tool opens click Yes to disclaimer.
  • Press Scan button.
  • The first time it is run, it will produce two logs in the same directory the tool is run from -- FRST.txt and (Addition.txt.
  • Please copy/paste both logs in your reply.

Hi Corrine,
I did go ahead and terminate COMBOFIX. Here are the results for Farbar. This time, I didn't yet select FIX - will await your input :->

==================== End Of Log ============================

Perfect. In fact, looking at the new set of logs, I noticed another software that has an out-dated, vulnerable version installed: Adobe Shockwave Player 11.5. The current version is 12.1.7.157, available from https://get.adobe.com/shockwave/. However, like Java, it is a software program that seems to have increasingly limited use, the primary of which is some online games. Like other Adobe products, the updates have unnecessary pre-checked extras. Thus, if your father-in-law does not play online games, I suggest uninstalling Asobe Shockwave Player. It can always be downloaded again if needed.

Please do the following to run FRST:

Note: If the tool warns you about the version you're using being an outdated version please download and run the updated version.

Hi, Mark.

That took care of cleaning up the orphans (and a bit more) that I saw in the other log.

1. If the computer is running smoothly now, let's take care of removing the tools used. Please download Delfix from here.

Ensure the following boxes are checked:

  • Remove disinfection tools
  • Create registry backup
  • Purge system restore
    delfix.jpg
  • Click Run

2. Since there were quite a few "extras", likely added as pre-checked options when installing software programs or updates, you may want to consider installing "Unchecky" on your father-in-law's computer. The object of the software is to keep potentially unwanted programs from being installed by automatically unchecking unrelated offers. Unchecky also provides a warning when you try to accept a potentially unwanted offer. The program automatically updates when a new version is available. Although an older article by How-to Geek, it provides additional information about Unchecky: How to Avoid Junkware Offers with Unchecky

Note: Even with Unchecky, a "custom" install of software is still recommended. It is also advised to continue watching each screen while installing software for anything that Unchecky may have missed.

3. Please refer your father-in-law to the Safe Computing Practices and other recommendations in this updated copy of "So how did I get infected in the first place?". Also see Answers to common security questions - Best Practices - Anti-Virus and Anti-Malware Software by quietman7.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Hi Corrine,
I think we are set. I will also follow-up on the other recommendation (unchecky, etc) you made.

I know I said thank you a lot in my replies but I did want to say it again as I really do appreciate the time/effort you and others on this site provide to help us out. It truly is appreciated. An donation to the site will gladly be made shortly.

I do have a couple final questions, if you got a few extra minutes :->.

1). Adobe Shockwave Player 11.5. I couldn't figure out how to uninstall this per your suggestion. I did find where I could disable it inside of IE (in the Manage Add-Ons section) but couldn't find where/how to uninstall.

2). Google Software Updater. This was installed a long time ago but I no longer use/need it. This is another one that I can't figure out how to uninstall. It doesn't show up in the Programs listed in the Control Panel. I did figure out how to disable the services so they don't run but unsure how to permanently get rid of this.

Any help on these would be great.

Again - thanks for all your help. You rock!!

Mark

Hi, Mark.

I'm happy I was able to help you with your father-in-law's computer.

As to Adobe Shockwave Player, Adobe has a Shockwave uninstaller. To get the uninstaller, click the following link and save the file to your hard drive: Adobe - Web Players. Once the file has finished downloading, double-click it to uninstall Shockwave. The uninstaller will work for Shockwave Player version 6 and higher.

Are you saying that you want all of Google Chrome removed from the computer? I can provide you with manual instructions or can "rip it out" with FRST. How would you like to do it?

Actually, I just looking to remove the Google Software Updater tool. Probably could go ahead an remove Chrome as well (didn't even realize it was on there). My father-in-law only uses IE.

Thanks!

Hi, Mark.

Putting on my thinking cap, I should have seen this yesterday. The reason you cannot uninstall the updater is because you used MSConfig which I should have called to your attention previously. MSConfig was never meant to control start up programs. It is only intended for temporary use when trouble-shooting problems, does not include all start up items, and can lock malware in the registry, only to become apparent should it be restored to normal start up.

1. Turn the following all back on by going into msconfig. Click start, type msconfig in the search box, open msconfig, click on the start up tab. Put a check mark in each entry, reboot the computer.

2. Please download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool again and save it to your Desktop.

Note: As before, you need to run the version compatible with your system.

3. When that is completed, I'll provide instructions for removing the Google Chrome remnants as well as some other things that should not have been disabled via msconfig (e.g., Ask toolbar). I'll also provide you with information about a simple program that works great at safely removing programs from start up without using msconfig.
