Need W7 file restoration from hard drive corruption help

Good morning SleepyDude! Hope you got some rest last night ;-) Thanks again for all of your help yesterday.

The problem is still occurring on this system so something is still not quite right. I have other Win7 systems that are similarly configured and this program does not report the error on them. BTW, before testing it again, I did uninstall it and reinstalled it. I did not reboot after uninstalling however-- taking the lazy man's approach that time around, thinking it was probably fixed. Ooops!

Please see the attached file that you requested. I had no problem with Minitoolbox once I saw how it worked...

BTW, there are 11 copies of msvcrt.dll on my system! Five of one version, three of another, two of another and some other miscellaneous versions. The versions installed in the Windows system folders appear to be of the same date and size (unless secretly damaged). According to the log, is seems that the Epson Print CD program is using the versions from the Windows system folders... I would reinstall those just to be sure they're good, but I don't yet know which of the installed C runtimes deposited those current msvcrt files (in the Windows folders) on my system. Let me know if you have any ideas and I'll jump on them tomorrow asap!!

Thanks and talk to you later!

Hi,

So this is a Windows 7 installation on a Mac computer using Bootcamp?

Download and install 2019-10 Security Monthly Quality Rollup for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB4519976)
http://download.windowsupdate.com/c..._58dae3b116e5c3f2e3d8e2623fd50d561601e145.msu
Please report the result.

It seems there is no Antivirus installed on the machine! you should install and do a scan using Malwarebytes Malwarebytes Download - Free Virus Scan & Virus Protection Tool
the free version only with on-demand scanner can detect and remove malware...

Yes it is a Mac as you said. It is a new install which is why no antivirus has yet been installed. I had just finished installing some of the last software (Print CD) when I noticed the problem. During the install process I had two issues, one with a hard drive that started revealing it's true nature of some bad sectors and another with an incompatible Bootcamp driver update (3.2) which I think led to the Windows Update corruption.

Thanks for the above link on the Monthly rollup. Will install and get back to you. I will also be comparing my other installations to see if I can determine what is causing the msvcrt.dll error. If I find the answer I will report back on that as well. Thanks again for your help!! --RPM7777

Tried to install the security rollup but got an error message saying that "it was not applicable to my computer"... I did install the latest defender update, which is the last "critical" update available. Six optional updates have not been installed. Otherwise, it has been fully patched-- according to Windows Update...

Hi,

I mentioned antivirus because there are so many free software's that include junk this days that we must have lots of cautions during install an even so in some cases there is no option to avoid the crap offered...

The Epson software installs correctly and only gives error when you try to use it?

One thing you can do is to use Minitoolbox on both machines and compare the list of installed Runtimes

If the program is installed on c:\Program Files (x86) usually only the x86 versions are used by that program.

Please provide the following log

SFCFix Script
  • Download SFCFix.exe (by Niemiro) and save it to the Desktop
  • Download the file SFCScript.txt, attached below, and save this to your Desktop
  • On your Desktop, make sure you have the two files:
    myjIXnC.png
    SFCFix.exe and
    8RAhYFg.gif
    SFCScript.txt
  • Drag the file SFCScript.txt onto the file SFCFix.exe and release it
  • The SFCFix tool will process the script
  • Upon completion, a log file SFCFix.txt should be created on your Desktop

Hi SleepyDude, Great to hear from you today! Before addressing any remaining issues, let me give you a progress update so we'll be on the same page: I reinstalled all of the C++ runtimes with the combination versions that contained the 64 & 32-bit versions. That had no effect on the printing issue.

Moving on, it was interesting to note that the only applications that caused the exception in splwow64 were two of my disc printing programs, Epson Print CD and "Sure Thing" Disc Publisher Edition. Both caused the same msvcrt.dll fault in splwow64. After doing some Online research on various print spooler issues, I bit the bullet and uninstalled all of the printers and cleaned them out of the Registry. I just started reinstalling them one-by-one today and so far no problems. Once I get that process completed (between numerous interruptions), I will report back to you. I hope at that time we can run a final scan, just to make sure that all is good before we wrap this up. I'll take a disc image from each partition afterward to use as a bare-metal backup for restoration purposes. Thanks again for all of your priceless help! :-)

You have a hard drive that is likely failing.

When you get a chance, please run SeaTools for DOS, LONG test - Hard Drive (HDD) Diagnostics (Sea Tools for DOS) & SSD Test

p.s. THANK YOU @SleepyDude for your help. John.

Thanks, JCGriff! You are absolutely right. I forgot to mention that I had replaced the hard drive with a new one and had imaged / restored that to the one that I am currently working from. SleepyDude was very patient and helped me get the corruption nailed down and those software elements replaced afterward. There was a remaining problem (hopefully the ONLY one...) with the printing subsystem that I worked on last night and today (read status below). My hope is that all will be rock-solid after I get that fixed. Thanks for a GREAT forum and to all of those who have been generous with their time to help! --RPM7777

I am glad to hear that because a failing hard drive can result in file(s) corruption.

So, at least the HDD problem is solved.

Thanks for posting that you have taken care of the hard drive issue.

Good Morning / Evening Everyone! Thanks again for helping with this issue. Thanks go out to jcgriff2 and SleepyDude for their generous investment of time, effort and goodwill. Because of their help, my system is now fully operational and free from corruption as far as I can tell from all scans, logs and reports. I think we can mark this case "closed"!! :-) Thanks again, everyone! Now, off I go to make a fresh image backup... ;-)
