New Windows 7 install won't update

- After reading a few threads (including this one) with similar kinds of WU problem, I think I see a pattern emerging.
- Installing KB3102810 did solve the problem and installing the latest Update Agent (UA) didn't work. I think that the latest UA assumes a number of things that were not yet present, that were not installed (yet) in the OS (in this case Win 7). I think that installing older updates (relative to the latest UA) will bring the OS (more) up to date and that at some point the user can install the latest UA. In that regard it's better to follow the sequence MS recommends.

- After installing KB3102810, install the May (??) 2016 "Convenience Roll Up" package that will install A LOT OF updates in one single run.

I've finally had a chance to get back to resolving this problem. As mentioned in an earlier posting, your guide states that step 3 (the Convenience Rollup) is optional & that you can skip to step 4, which is what I did. When I read about the Convenience Rollup it mentioned some known issues therefore I decided not to go that route.

Where I left off was after manually installing KB 3102810 I was able do download & install more than half the updates. But then I could not download any more of them.

I let download updates run for 2 days & nothing happens. I then ran the WindowsUpdateDiagnostic tool several times & keep getting error 80070057. Wonderful.

Why the heck was I able to download & install updates in groups of 30-40 at a time, then all of a sudden I can't do anymore?

Again, this is on new SSD with a fresh install of Windows 7 and SP1.

How do I get the updates started again?

- MS sometime also makes mistakes in the Updates.
- If you installed that "Convenience Roll Up" right after re-installing Win 7 then your system is (comparatively) "clean" and then those "known issues" matter much less. I myself tried it about 3 times and never had any problems.
- GOOGLE provided one (possible) answer for solving the "Error 80070057" problem.

Windows 7 update error 0x80070057

When I want to update then:
- I never allow WU to install any updates without my consent.
- I always close as much programs as possible.
- I Always let WU wait with updating until I shut down my system (use the "update & shutdown" option in the

- You're sure you don't have any corruptions (think: SFCfix tool) ?

I did not use the Convenience Rollup Pkg because of the known issues. While it might be faster to use it, I wasn’t in any hurry & figured why should I have to deal with any potential issues. Especially with a fresh OS installed on a new SSD.

I’ve previously run the WindowsUpdateDiagnostic tool as mentioned in the link you provided. Also did the “net stop” & “net start’ when trying to do the Manual Update, but to no avail. I did not re-register the BITS files and the Windows Update file as mentioned in the Manual Update because I thought that seemed excessive on a new OS install.

That being said, I did the updates in groups of 30-40 at a time & everything was going just fine. And then it wasn’t.

I also do not let Windows install any updates without my consent.
I previously ran SFC & will do it again.
