though had to use Microsoft's Windows Defender rather than MSE as its installed in Windows 8 and that link mentioned "you can't use Microsoft Security Essentials with Windows 8"

should i run any of the cpu tests again? or really is it just use the PC as normal and see if it crashes?

My apologies, you are 100% correct. I do not use Windows 8 and keep forgetting that fact. As long as Windows Defender is enabled, that's OK.

Yah, consistently crashing from running the Intel burn test raises flags on the CPU being suspect. Now, as for Prime95, the thing is there's actually a number of different testing procedures that can be used with Prime95, and the one you used probably isn't triggering it. I'm not sure how to alter such on the version that runs outside Windows, but for the Windows version there's Torture Test with Blend, Large FFT and Small FFT options. Blend is best to test CPU-to-RAM crosstalk, and Large FFT is best to test CPU internal caches.
