Hello, I am Kit and this is my first time posting here, because I am running out of options to find why my PC is freezing. So, to recap...
This started about three months ago. I was playing VALORANT and my PC screen for the most part froze, the screen was running at 1 FPS and the audio was making ringing noise, and then it restarted, no error code or nothing. I didn't think much about it and restarted and it didn't freeze for a couple of weeks. Until recently, it has been freezing about 2- 6 times a day. The motherboard also shows an error code "0d" and the screen doesn't show picture or do anything, so I have to manually restart the PC using the power button. As a result, I downgraded from Windows 11 back to 10. I had to wipe everything, but it didn't freeze for two days, so I thought I might have fixed it, until it froze on the third day. So, I bought new RAM which is the RAM I have listed on my profile. And again, these past two days I have had no problems, until today. It did the exact same thing: it gave me the "0d" error code on the motherboard and just sat like that with no picture.

So, what have I tried...
  1. I have tried ignoring the problem and going about my day, but the longer I didn't take any action the PC froze more frequently
  2. I tried uninstalling programs that showed errors in Event Viewer to see if that would fix it, it didn't and pc continued to freezer
  3. I tried wiping the C: drive and start from scratch, but after 3 days it froze again
  4. I tried updating BIOS, downloading AMD Adrenaline for CPU, and kept NVIDIA drivers updated, and that did nothing
  5. I have tried running the commands to check my OS on CMD and that did nothing
  6. I replaced the RAM cause I saw somewhere that the "0d" error code might be related, but after 3 days it froze again.
  7. I tried using Event Viewer to see if there was any logs to see why the PC froze, but every time it wouldn't have a single log regarding to it freezing
  8. I tried installing WhoCrashed to see if there would be any crash logs, but when it froze TODAY, I checked and it said no logs were recorded

There's one more thing I want to address that might give a clue.
One day my PC froze and didn't turn back on, we checked and the CPU cooler had failed as I have an AIO. We didn't think much of it and we replaced the cooler, not the CPU, and it worked for a few months.
May not be of value, but I am taking no risks leaving anything out.

Hello, and welcome to the forum! Though I'm disappointed that we seem to have been your last option....;)

The very first thing I notice is that your new G.Skill RAM (F4-4000C18-32GVK) is not on the QVL for your CPU and motherboard. That doesn't mean that it won't work but it does mean that it's not been tested and validated as fully compatible. When buying RAM it's always worth sticking to QVL RAM because you know there won't be any surprises. What weas the part number of the original RAM?

You have four (seemingly) identical Samsung 2TB 980 Pro NVMe SSDs, are you running any of those drives in a RAID array?

According to your motherboard manual (page 43) that 0d error code is reserved. Where did you see that it "might be RAM related"?

Your System log shows five hardware (WHEA) errors during the last three days (the log only goes back 5 days)...
Rich (BB code):
Log Name: System
Source: Microsoft-Windows-WHEA-Logger
Date: 13/12/2024 22:31:27
Event ID: 18
Task Category: None
Level: Error
Keywords:
User: LOCAL SERVICE
Computer: DESKTOP-TERFPPE
Description:
A fatal hardware error has occurred.

Reported by component: Processor Core
Error Source: Machine Check Exception
Error Type: Cache Hierarchy Error
Processor APIC ID: 0

The details view of this entry contains further information.
A machine check exception indicates a fatal hardware problem and a cache hierarchy error is typically either RAM related or CPU cache related. What's interesting about these WHEA errors is that they all happen on either APCID 0 or APCID 1, these are logical processor numbers and they probably relate to the same CPU core. This may thus indicate a problem with one of your CPU cores.

That the problem remains even across Windows installs does also very strongly indicate that this is a hardware problem and not a Windows or driver problem. I think the first thing for you to do now is to stress test your CPU...
  1. Download Prime95 and a CPU temperature monitor (CoreTemp will do).
  2. Keep the temperature monitor running all the time you run Prime95. Your CPU will get hot!
  3. Run each of the three Prime95 tests (smallFFTs, largeFFTs, and Blend) one after the other for a minimum of 1 hour per test, 2 hours per test would be better.
  4. If Prime95 generates error messages, if the system crashes/freezes/BSODs, or if your CPU temp approaches 90°C (Tmax for your CPU), then stop Prime95 and let us know what happened.
Note that a properly cooled and stable CPU should be able to run all Prime95 tests pretty much indefinitely.

FYI: The small FFT test stresses the CPU more than RAM. The large FFT test stresses RAM more than the CPU. The Blend test is a mixture of the two.

Let us know how that stress test goes.

Hey, thank you for responding I will do my best to answer your questions.

What was the part number of the original RAM? - - - - - - G.Skill Trident Z RGB 128 GB (4 x 32 GB) DDR4-4000 CL18 Memory

You have four (seemingly) identical Samsung 2TB 980 Pro NVMe SSDs, are you running any of those drives in a RAID array? - - - - - - - - - I am not running raid

According to your motherboard manual (page 43) that 0d error code is reserved. Where did you see that it "might be RAM related"? - - - - - - I saw it on a post on reddit when I was just looking for the error code "0d"

Now, I ran Prime95 and for the smal lFFT test and the blend test my CPU was about 70-75°C. But when I ran the large FFT my CPU was at 90°C

Your processor only supports ram upto 3200 MHz.
But you installed unsupported memory of 4000 MHz (your motherboard may support 4000+ ram, but your cpu does not.) So using non-supported ram whereas, the cpu only supports 3200 MHz can cause problems with your computer.

Your processor only supports ram upto 3200 MHz.
I'm afraid this statement is factually inaccurate. What the CPU specified RAM speed means is the maximum RAM clock speed which the CPU is guaranteed to support. Most CPUs will happily support RAM clocked well above these speeds - but the CPU vendor doesn't warranty that this will be stable, even though in most cases it is. IMO this is CPU vendors hedging their bets and ensuring they don't get warranty replacement claims for those few CPUs that won't run RAM at higher speeds. It's just insurance on the part of the CPU vendors.

It IS true that when bad RAM is suspected it's wise to remove all overclocks. If it's stable at SPD speeds then I usually advise setting an XMPO/DOCP profile to clock RAM no faster than the CPU specified maximum. If it's stable at that speed then your CPU is functioning as designed (or at least, warrantied). It's then worth increasing the RAM overclock in steps to find the maximum RAM speed that your CPU is stable with.

@captainploo I would very much suggest that you first test your RAM using Memtest86 as described above. It may be that you need to replace that RAM - but we're not there yet.

Sorry, I was talking about Memtes86 in post #9 there and we asked you to run Prime95. My mistake.
  • Did you run each of the three Prime95 tests one after another?
  • Did you run each test (smallFFTs, largeFFTs, Blend) for at least one hour each test? That's at least 3 hours worth of testing.
  • If you get errors running Prime95 please take a screenshot or photograph of the error and post it to the cloud with a link to it here.
SRTtrail.txt is an error log that is usually associated with the Windows Automatic Repair feature and we haven't asked you to try automatic repair yet.

I did run all three tests yesterday for about 2 hours per test, and nothing happened. I saw the passes that it did and all passes were successful there were no crashes or freezes

Thanks for that.

There are a number of errors logged that related to the Windows Component Store and the Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL) component, here's an example...

The LxssManager.dll is a major component of WSL and the storelayout.cpp module is related to the Windows component store. There are a few things I'd like you to do now....
  1. Open an elevated command prompt and enter the command wsl -l -v. Post a screenshot of the output of that command.
  2. In the same elevated command prompt enter the command dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth. Allow it to complete (it will take a while) and post a screenshot of the output of that command.
  3. In the same elevated command prompt enter the command sfc /scannow. Allow it to complete (it will take a while) and post a screenshot of the output of that command.
There are also a number of error for Minecraft which might be related. Are you having problems with Minecraft?

I have not tried running Minecraft in a while, as I am using my gaming laptop as a backup. Do you think I should try to run MC to see if it crashes.
