I have a problem essentially identical to the one solved by Aura recently. My Win 10 Search window is greyed out and Cortana doesn't work. I run sfc /scannow and it gives: Cannot repair member file [l:106{53}]"MicrosoftEdgeSquare44x44.scale-125_contrast-white.png" of Microsoft-Windows-MicrosoftEdge, Version = 10.0.10240.16463, pA = amd64, nonSxS, PublicKeyToken = {l:8 b:31bf3856ad364e35} in the store, hash mismatch

I see that Aura seems to have a solution. Please shephard me through this. I wonder if MS will send out an update that will fix it someday. Until Aura or MS helps me I have no windows search or Cortana. Thank you for what you can do!!

Hi Mikmit :)

Posting here as a place holder, I'll source that file when I get home tonight.

Aura,
Origianally, I was having this corrupted file as originally posted. My recent runs of sfc have come back clean. I also ran DISM and it indicates no curruptions. Despite all of this the "Search" window is still greyed out and Cortana won't run. I tried to create a new Windows user account to see what would happen and I keep getting a message that "Something went wrong". "Try again, or select Cancel to set up you device later". I haven't got a clue what is going on. I haven't found any other issues with Win 10. If I can't fix it, I may have to roll back to Win 7 Pro.
Thanks,
Mikmit

Do you get an error message when trying to run Cortana? What do you mean by "the Search window is still greyed out"? You mean this?

I get no message when I try to run Cortana, it just won't run. The Search window is there but with a grey background and lighter grey letters. "Search the web and Windows". When I click on it, it changes its shades a little but does nothing else. Thanks for your help. Hope we can fix it.

This is what I get when I click on Search the web and Windows.

You need to enter content (text) in order for it to display something.

I can't type anything into the box. It won't accept input. It is note like your box, it is grey with light grey letters. M

Press on Win Key + R and enter services.msc. In the services window, look for Windows Search. Is the service Running or not? Also, what is its Startup Type?

I am pretty windows savy, I don't claim to be an analyst but I do pretty well until a major problem comes up. I have one of those now. M

Can you follow the instructions in my post above please? :)

Right-click on it and select Start. What does it do?

When you right-click on the service (Windows Search), what options do you have?

I can't get Windows Search to show up. I hope I didn't miss anything. I can't even get the task manager to run right now.

Are you able to open a command prompt with Admin Rights? Go in C:\Windows\System32, right-click on cmd and select Run as Administrator. From there, enter the following command:
Code:
net start wsearch

Long after I trie your services.msc a message comes up in a box saying windows can't respond in a timely manner.

I cannot get a command window with admin rights only just a cmd window. maybe I should reboot?

Yes please, restart and try the steps above again.
