[SOLVED] Server 2019 not installing Updates, repair failed

Thanks, I'm hoping it will help clarify and expand on what showed in your latest CBS.log

  • Click on the Search button and type Cmd
  • From the search results choose Command Prompt then Run as Administrator
  • When prompted by UAC allow the prompt.
  • When the Command Prompt Window opens, copy and paste the following command into it, then press Enter
wusa /uninstall /KB:5004244
  • Let me know if it says it was successful or if there are any errors.

Hi Gary,

it just states that that Update is not present on the system. I don't know if it helps, but I attached the latest CBS.log to this post

It's OK, I expected it to say that it wasn't installed. Just needed to check.

What we now need to do, is to remove its remnants, because they're one part at least of your problem, and to start that procedure we need to scan for them.

  • Click Search and type CMD
  • Right click the CMD App from the search results and select Run as Administrator
  • With the App open ...
    • Copy/Paste the following Command into it ...
    • reg load HKLM\COMPONENTS C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\COMPONENTS
      • This loads your COMPONENT hive.
    • You can now close the Command window.
  • Next ...
  • Download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your Desktop
    • Note: Your antivirus program may report FRST incorrectly as an infection. If so, disable the real-time protection when downloading and running FRST
  • Right-click on FRST64.exe and choose Run as administrator
    • Copy and paste ... KB5004244 ... into the Search box.
    • Click the Search Registry button.
    • When the scan is complete ...
      • A log will open on your Desktop ... SearchReg.txt
    • Attach the file ... SearchReg.txt ... to your next reply.
  • You may close any remaining open windows now.

No problem, I'm not going anywhere any time soon.

  • Download the attached fixlist.txt and save it to the same location as FRST (must be in same folder or it won't process).
  • NOTICE: This script was written specifically for this user. Running it on another machine may cause damage to your operating system
  • Now press the Fix button once and wait.
  • FRST will process fixlist.txt
  • When finished, it will produce a log fixlog.txt in the same folder/directory as FRST64.exe
  • Please post me the log

Reboot your computer to "finalise" the changes made to your Registry by this fix.

No problem, I realise that not everything can be done immediately, so I'll talk to you when the holiday is over.

It's been a week since my last post and I still haven't heard back from you.

DO YOU STILL NEED MY HELP ?

If I don't hear back from you within the next 24 hours, I will presume not, and will close this topic.

Hi Gary, I'm sorry, but I'm not quite sure what I need to do next. I posted the fixlog in my last reply and the server has been rebooted after applying the fix. Do I need to run a new round of dism / sfc / updates?

Sorry, yes please try updating.

If successful please let me know.

If unsuccessful please post your latest CBS.log

Hi Gary,
I had to again terminate tiworker.exe forcefully, because update processing was stuck at 100% after reboot (I let it sit there over night). But the cumulative Updates for Windows and .net now show up as installed updates. I will check for updates after work and do another reboot, to see if that's really the case. Here is the CSB.log and latest CBSpersist: CBS-2023-06-15.zip

Looking over latest logs now.

Question .... what protective programs do you have running on your machine, because I'm seeing a lot of errors of the form .... [HRESULT = 0x80070013 - ERROR_WRITE_PROTECT] .... which suggests that the updater is being prevented from making all the changes it needs to make. Most likely reason for this being some installed protective program.

Hi Gary, there's a Bitdefender running on this VM. I will try updates again after uninstalling the Bitdefender Agent.

Bitdefender is known to be quite "aggressive", so there's a fair chance that it may be interfering with things.

I'll be interested to see how things progress without it.

So I removed Bitdefender and started a search for updates, but there was only a Defender Update available. The machine also rebooted normally. I attached the cbs.log to this post. I'm not quite sure if everything is fine now, but I guess we will find that out at the next patch day.

Latest log looks clean. So unless something happens to suggest otherwise I think we can presume your machine is up to date.

I'll leave this topic open for a few days so you can post back if any problems do arise, but if I haven't heard anything from you within 72 hours, I'll presume things are still OK and will close the topic.

Hi Gary, I'm hopeful that everything's alright now. The server is running fine so far. Since we will probably only find out after the next updates, I think you can safely close this thread.
I'm very grateful for your assistance and your patience in this matter! I'll definetely ask my boss to make a donation to Sysnative, your work here really is a godsend!

OK, thanks for letting me know. I've marked this topic as solved.
