[SOLVED] Server 2022 - 0x80073701 on 21H2 update attempt

WARNING! The following fix is specific to the user's system in this thread only. No one else should follow these instructions, as it could damage your system.

  • Download the attachment SFCFix.zip and save it on your desktop.
  • Save any work you have open, and close all programs.
  • Drag the SFCFix.zip file over the SFCFix.exe executable and release it.

  • Once done, a file will appear on your desktop, called SFCFix.txt
  • Open the file, then copy and paste its content in your next reply.

Next ...

  • Click Search button and type Command Prompt
  • From the results, right click on the Command Prompt icon, and select Run as administrator
  • A Command Window will open.
  • Copy paste the command below into it, then press Enter
  • Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  • Once DISM has finished running ...
    • Please attach your ... C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\cbs.log ... to your next reply.
  • If the file is too large, upload it to a file sharing service, and post me the link.
  • Examples of services to upload to are WeTransfer and TransferKit and SendFileOnline

The source files could not be found.
Use the "Source" option to specify the location of the files that are required to restore the feature. For more information on specifying a source location, see Configure a Windows Repair Source.

The DISM log file can be found at C:\Windows\Logs\DISM\dism.log

Yes, I expected this to happen. Looks like we're dealing with a very similar problem to the one we fixed earlier, just a different set of files.

Looking over your latest logs now, back as soon as I've created the next fix (and had it checked and approved).

DISM completed successfully. Subsequent updates failed again.

There were some problems installing updates, but we'll try again later. If you keep seeing this and want to search the web or contact support for information, this may help: (0x80073701)

Can you post me the SFCFix.txt log that I asked for as well please.

Edit ...... It's OK I've downloaded a new copy of your logs.zip folder, and it's present in that.

For some strange reason it was not present in the first folder I downloaded.

@Gary R just checking in. Should I look into rebuilding this server at this point? It appears after every fix, a new wave of issues surface.
 
Sorry for the long delay, had a few problems to deal with (not the ones in your log), my dog chewed through the output lead on my laptop charger, and then the replacement charger that I ordered failed out of the box, so had to get a replacement for my replacement. That arrived today, so unless this one fails as well, then I'm now good to go.

Back online, and just waiting for my latest fix to be approved before I can post it.

Hard to tell whether we're close to a final fix at this point. Update problems have a habit of revealing themselves in a piecemeal manner, so as you fix one issue, others arrive. All I can really say, is that your latest log shows fewer errors than the earlier ones, which is generally a good sign that we're coming close to a conclusion.

Can you now please post me a copy of your Components file .....

  • Navigate to C:\Windows\System32\Config and locate the COMPONENTS file.
  • Please copy this file to your desktop.
  • Note: If you receive an error that this file is in-use, simply reboot your computer and try again.
  • Right-click on this file on your desktop and select Send To...Compressed (zipped) folder. This will create a file named COMPONENTS.ZIP on your desktop.
  • The file will likely be too large to upload here so please upload to a file sharing service.
  • Examples of services to upload to are WeTransfer and TransferKit and SendFileOnline
