Server 2022 21H2 very strange update problem where only the last current patch fail to install.

Hmm, it seems this bug has become more complicated than previous cases. And some previous fixes keep getting undone after each update attempt. So at this point it might be better to schedule a maintaince window to perform a repair install.

In-place upgrade Server 2022 with the MSDN (Retail) ISO.
  • Navigate to the URL below and sign-in with your MSDN registered account.
  • Use the search field to find and download the correct ISO file.
  • Mount the Windows Server ISO and run Setup.exe.
  • Use the option Download updates, drivers, and optional features (recommended) and click Next.
  • Note: If you don't want to update during the in-place upgrade, press Change how setup downloads updates and select Not right now - !!! Not recommended !!!
  • When the following screen is prompted enter your (25 digit) product key. Note: Do not use the public KMS key as listed here.

  • In the next screen, select the image of the installed Windows Server edition and click Next.
  • Then accept the EULA. To perform a in-place upgrade, you need to check keep personal files and apps. Then click Next.
  • After clicking Next, an upgrade process will start checking for updates, when this is ready click install to start the in-place upgrade.

Thanks, we can try to continue to repair this 'critical' server if you want, and perhaps with a clone of this server in a virtual environment.

For a business critical system, our recommendation would be to contact Microsoft or a paid support service who are equipped for your specific use case. Sysnative and our volunteers are not able to guarantee a fix for any machine, or accept any liability for damage done to the machine during the repair process.

Complex corruptions and system issues have some risk that the machine will be unrepairable, or risk during fixing the machine that something may go wrong and result in an inoperable machine.

Please provide the following:

FRST Scan:
  1. Download the Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your Desktop:
64-bit: Downloading Farbar Recovery Scan Tool
Note: Your antivirus program may report FRST incorrectly as an infection. If so, disable the real-time protection when downloading and running FRST.
  2. Right-click to run the tool as administrator. When the tool opens click Yes to disclaimer.
  3. Note: Ensure that the Addition.txt check box is checked at the bottom of the form within the Optional Scan area.
  4. Press the Scan button.
  5. Please wait for the tool to finish. It will produce two logfiles called FRST.txt and Addition.txt in the same directory the tool is run from (which should be the desktop)
  6. Post the logfiles FRST.txt and Addition.txt as attachment in your next reply.
