[SOLVED] Server 2022 Core: Cannot install KB5034439 (resized partition already)

And do these servers also have a disk 1? And is this a virtual RAID setup.
I have 5 servers running 2022. All are VM's. Two VMs have a disk 1 (or more), and three only have a disk 0. All have been successfully patched, except this problematic server, which is the only one which is server core, if that matters.

That's possible, is the Windows Defender feature installed on this core server? And is WD up-to-date?

Let me confirm, but in the meantime, below is what I see in the equivalent of 'check for updates' (ie, it shows Defender).
Code:
 ================================================================================
                                  Install updates
  ================================================================================

  Search for:

    1) All quality updates
    2) Recommended quality updates only
    3) Feature updates

  Select an update category (Blank=Cancel): 1
  Searching for all applicable updates...

  Available update(s):
    1) 2024-01 Security Update for Microsoft server operating system version 21H2 for x64-based Systems (KB5034439)
    2) Security Intelligence Update for Microsoft Defender Antivirus - KB2267602 (Version 1.413.76.0) - Current Channel (Broad)

  Install (A)ll updates, (N)o updates or select a (S)ingle update? (Blank=Cancel):

Please install KB2267602 first, reboot the server and then try to install KB5034439 again if no other updates are available.

Thanks. I installed KB2267602 successfully, it said no reboot was required, so just refreshed the list of available updates, and only KB5034439 was available, so choose to install that... which failed. I rebooted, checked available updates again, only KB5034439 appears. Tried installing. Still fails.

Hi,

I've installed a clean evaluation version of Server 2022 DC Core and after resizing the WinRE partition KB5034439 still fails. Reinstalled the OS with desktop experience, resized the partition and KB5034439 installed without any issues. And it seems this is a common issue with the Core version:
I've also cathed a copy of this update from the SoftwareDistribution folder to see if I could install it using DISM, but nog luck either. Another option I haven't tried yet is to install the desktop GUI on the Core install to see if this will resolve the issue. But that might also be worth testing in a cloned environment!

Thanks for this. Eventually I had to use the reg hack described in your link to bypass this update. Seems Microsoft have no intenion of fixing their patch (it was released in Jan and its not June), so this is the only work around.

Yep. I agree. Please mark as solved. Many thanks for your help. It is much appreciated.

You're welcome. Unfortunately, there is no neat solution at this time for Core Servers, but if I come across a possible solution I will post it in this thread...
