[SOLVED] Sfc /scannow could not start the repair service

Man you did it again sfc /and checksur looks good now I am trying to run the updates and got error c8000266 I will try it again and let it run and see what happens . now that the sfc /cheksur is good I will create a system restore point and a registry backup , so when I run into trouble I can always come back to this point in time that my computer files and registry was straight. please tell me the difference between the sfc /scannow and the checksur scan. Thanks Brilliant Brian.

SFC is very good at scanning payload files (basically most of the files on your system). It's not very good at scanning manifests though, and it doesn't scan the registry at all.
SURT is very good at scanning manifests & the registry, but not very good at payload files.

So each tools has a purposes and scans different things.

Thanks for the answer I understand now more clearly. Brian I have been trying to install update for two days now I need one of those hotfix to loose the updates. the sfc /checksur logs are good the updates are stuck on checking for updates and sometimes I get this error c8000266. Thanks

Hey brilliant Brian the first one did not apply to my computer the second one installed and my updates has been running after the new install since 10:45 am and still going in the loop. I notice that my net framework is a 3.5 sp1 don't i suppose to have a higher net framework for vista sp2 64 bit?

Good morning Brian it is 9:15 am my time and checking for updates has been running since 7:05 pm yesterday and still going in a loop. Also I notice that my computer management console has stopped saying a problem caused the program to stop working correctly . cannot open event viewer, task scheduler and other programs even some downloaded programs. Is the update problem causing this also?

windows could not search for new updates code 8000266. windows vista is something else.

Hmm....OK, let's take a look.

1. Click your Start button and then type cmd in the search box. Right-click on cmd that comes up in the search results and select Run as administrator.
2. A User Account Control dialog may come up asking for approval. If it does go ahead and allow.
3. A command prompt window will open. Copy/Paste the following into the command-prompt and hit enter.
wmic qfe list brief /format:texttablewsys > "%USERPROFILE%\desktop\hotfix.txt"

4. After the command runs there will be a file on your desktop named hotfix.txt.
5. Please zip/attach this file.
