[SOLVED] SFCFix reporting files not fixed automatically

Thanks, Brian. Will do. It is going to take a while, as everything I try spends most of the time "Not Responding". The machine is so busy doing whatever-it-is-doing that everything is very slow, and an additional fan is kicking in (or the same fan running at higher speed, either way it is noisier).

Hi Brian,

Can all or some of what is needed be achieved in safe mode? The machine is bordering on unusable in non-safe mode. MSConfig went into "Not responding" and stayed like that.

I obviously will try again if necessary, but an wondering whether there safe mode is a possible alternative?

Thanks

Jim

Sure can. Follow the steps in the link that I provided while in Safe Mode. Last thing you should do is then unselect Safe Mode and boot normally. Thanks.

Hi Brian,

Thanks for your last reply. Once in safe mode I was able make the changes very quickly, vs spending ages to fail to make them in normal mode.

The machine is now MUCH more responsive with the services disabled.

A few things that may be useful/relevant:

  1. There were 5 services I was not able to disable, all of them McAfee related.
  2. After starting in normal mode today the disk usage was initially very high at 99%-100%, but even with that the machine was more responsive than previously. It has dropped considerably, and is now stable at 0%
  3. Previously (noticed before your began helping me) the event logger was showing vast numbers of errors. It occurred to me to check today and there are far fewer - some relating to something called BitLocker, and others about bad blocks on disk.
  4. The event logger also shows that some Windows Updates have been downloaded. I won't do anything with these, but presumably the OS may do something with them automatically.

Thank you for your ongoing help.

Excellent! OK, now I would like you to uninstall your McAfee software. Ensure you have the registration key so that you can re-install once we get your machine working properly again. This software has been known to cause these types of issues that you are having and I want to eliminate that possibility before continuing. After you uninstall McAfee from Add/Remove programs and reboot, please run the McAfee removal tool from the following link to ensure any remnants are also removed. Let me know when complete.

I've now un-installed McAfee Webadvisor and McAfee Security Centre, re-started, run the utility you linked to, and re-started again - all without a hitch (except a slow re-start).

A few observations, though not sure how relevant/useful they are:
  • I had to do the un-install using "Programs and Features" rather than "Add/Remove programs" - I assume this is just a labelling difference between versions of Windows?
  • It appears that the McAfee for the laptop can be re-installed from from the "your account" area on the McAfee website. It looks like once you have a subscription product keys are not used. (Fingers crossed on that one!)
  • The second re-start took a surprisingly long time, with a lot of disk activity (as indicated by the HD light, although I have noticed that disk activity as shown in task manager and the HD light being on do not always match).
  • The laptop has nothing except task manager open (I'm posting from another machine) and disk usage is variable. I've seen it at both 0% and 100%.

Thank you for the detailed information. Let's check the health of your disk.

GSmartControl
Follow the instructions below to test your hard drive health with GSmartControl:

  • Download GSmartControl and save it on your Desktop;
  • Extract the content of the GSmartControl .zip archive and execute gsmartcontrol.exe;
  • Identify your drive in the list, and double-click on it to bring up it's window (usually you'll find your drive by it's size or it's brand name);
  • Go in the Perform Tests tab, then select Extended Self-test in the Test type drop-down list and click on Execute (this test can take a few hours to complete);
  • Once the test is over, the results will be displayed at the bottom of the window. Please copy and paste these results in your next reply;
  • Also, go in the Attributes tab and if you have any entries highlighted in red or pink, copy and paste their name in your next reply (or take a screenshot of the GSmartControl window and attach it in your next reply);

Worryingly, the test with estimated duration 3 h 6 min completed in seconds.

Screen shot of the Perform Tests tab is attached.

The text from the Self-test Logs tab is below.

A screen shot showing the only highlighted item from the Attributes tab is also attached.

Complete selective self-test log:

SMART Selective self-test log data structure revision number 1
SPAN MIN_LBA MAX_LBA CURRENT_TEST_STATUS
1 0 0 Not_testing
2 0 0 Not_testing
3 0 0 Not_testing
4 0 0 Not_testing
5 0 0 Not_testing
Selective self-test flags (0x0):
After scanning selected spans, do NOT read-scan remainder of disk.
If Selective self-test is pending on power-up, resume after 0 minute delay.

Bummer. Your hard drive is failing which is likely why you are having these issues. You mentioned that this laptop was fairly new. Was it purchased through an OEM like Dell, HP, etc.? Is it still under warranty?

Hi Brian,

Thanks for your diagnosis. I was beginning to fear that this might be the case.

I believe the laptop is a couple of years old. The folder in c:\users for the only account on the machine was created August 2013, so I guess it was new then. It is a Dell laptop. I doubt it is still under warranty but I will find out.

On the positive side, I have taken (what I believe to be) a comprehensive backup.

Thank you very much for your efforts. I am very very grateful, as I am well out of my depth.

Thanks, Brian.

We don't have a decision yet on whether to repair or replace. My guess it that it didn't ought to be too difficult to fit a replacement disk, but I'm less sure about re-installing Win 8 and obtaining drivers etc.

If we decided to replace the disk, should we continue here or would you want me to start a new thread?

Jim
