Very good. Please try the 'bcdedit /export c:\bcdbackup' command again

Is this machine dual or multiboot (more than one version of Windows or other OS)?

At this point I think our only option is to rebuild the boot configuration data. Unfortunately this runs the risk of making the machine unbootable, so please make sure that you have a good backup of anything important on the machine if you choose to continue.

Download the Windows 7 recovery environment ISO here: win7 64bit rc.iso
Use a bootable USB creator such as the Windows USB/DVD Download Tool (http://wudt.codeplex.com) or Rufus (Rufus - Create bootable USB drives the easy way) to create a USB boot drive using the downloaded ISO.
Put this USB drive somewhere safe to use if the machine does not boot.

Next, restart your computer and begin tapping the F8 key on the keyboard until the Windows boot menu is displayed. Choose 'Repair Your Computer' from the list and press enter.
(more detailed instructions here: https://www.sysnative.com/forums/wi...windows-recovery-options-windows-7-vista.html)

Once at the recovery options screen, choose Command Prompt from the list.

When the command window opens, follow the instructions here: https://www.sysnative.com/forums/wi...y-fix-boot-configuration-windows-7-vista.html

copied here for convenience:
press enter after each command.
Code:
C:

cd boot

ren C:\boot\bcd bcd.old

bootrec /rebuildbcd

Choose 'yes' when asked to add any Windows installations to the list.

Code:
bootrec /fixmbr

bootrec /fixboot

At this point, close the command window, then choose 'restart' on the Recovery Options menu.

Let me know if you encounter any problems.

First of all, I would like to THANK-YOU zcomputerwiz for your effort and time in trying to resolve my Windows Update problem.

However, this path is NO LONGER required as the free Windows 10 Upgrade is no longer offered.

Therefore, I plan to remain with the Windows 7 Pro operating system and the regular Windows updates are installed without complications.

So the first rule of medicine is: DO NO HARM!

I would imagine this also applies to computers.

{ I already told you that the "Repair Your Computer" is a HOLLOW path on hard disk local:C.

This is a 32-bit computer and does the Windows 7 recovery environment ISO win7 64-bit work on this computer? }

So at this moment, I will NOT be rebuilding the boot configuration.

My computer works pretty well so I DON"T have to go in this direction.

I RERAN the SFC /SCANNOW and SFCFix tool and I am down to one corrupted file instead of two.

I was wondering if you could simply CORRECT the single corrupted file?

Sorry about that. It is unusual that the 'repair your computer' / recovery environment won't boot.

Here's a fix for the corrupt file:

SFCFix Script

Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.

  1. Download SFCFix.exe (by niemiro) and save this to your Desktop.
  2. Download the file below, SFCFix.zip, and save this to your Desktop. Ensure that this file is named SFCFix.zip - do not rename it.
  3. Save any open documents and close all open windows.
  4. On your Desktop, you should see two files: SFCFix.exe and SFCFix.zip.
  5. Drag the file SFCFix.zip onto the file SFCFix.exe and release it.
  6. SFCFix will now process the script.
  7. Upon completion, a file should be created on your Desktop: SFCFix.txt.
  8. Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of this file into your next post for me to analyse please - put [CODE][/CODE] tags around the log to break up the text.

View attachment SFCFix.zip

SFC Scan

  1. Click on the Start
    Start%20Orb.jpg
button and in the search box, type Command Prompt
  2. When you see Command Prompt on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator
  3. When command prompt opens, copy and paste the following commands into it, press enter after each

    sfc /scannow

Wait for this to finish before you continue

    copy %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log %userprofile%\Desktop\cbs.txt
  4. This will create a file, cbs.txt on your Desktop. Please zip and attach this to your next post.

Was this a second SFCFix run?
If not, you'll need to drag and drop the SFCFix.zip file downloaded from the earlier post onto SFCFix.exe to make the file replacement :)
I'll need to see the SFCFix.txt results from that run to verify that the file was actually copied.

"Was this a second SFCFix run?" No, it was the first run. I will REPEAT the process one more time to get a clean break (DELETE previous process). "Drag the file SFCFix.zip onto the file SFCFix.exe and release it." Is there any clicks to RELEASE SFCFix.zip when it is superimposed on SFCFix.exe? The ORDER is SFCFix Script FIRST and then SFC Scan SECOND. T787

Excellent! It looks like the file has been replaced :thumbsup2:

Now let's verify the replacement with SFC. If you have already started an SFC scan you can ignore these instructions and attach the CBS.zip when it completes.

SFC Scan

Log looks good, I agree :)

Is there anything else I can assist you with at this time?

OK! I spent some time updating the HP BIOS (787G7) version from v01.09 to v01.14 {10/14/2015}.

It was a little scary going through the Windows update route (I read the instructions three times and I was wondering if it would boot up correctly.)

Nevertheless, it was a successful task!

Thereafter, I decided to UNINSTALL the HP ProtectTools Security Manager (HPPTSM).

I believe either HPPTSM or the leftover processes of uninstalling Bitdefender (BD) Internet Security 2016 {namely bdagent.exe and vsserv.exe} is and /or are responsible for the "access is denied" command line response from "bcdedit /export c:\bcdbackup" command instruction.

I do NOT want to permanently REMOVE (rather than uninstalling) BD from computer since I have months of protection left.

Unfortunately, I can NOT uninstall HPPTSM since I was UNSUCESSFUL in UNINSTALLING Drive Encryption for HP ProtectTools (DEFHPPT).

The weird thing is that I can NOT EVEN System Restore (SR) earlier point since SR is locked out of certain files so it will NOT restore to before uninstalling DEFHPPT.

I can NOT reinstall DEFHPPT since a certain \sytem32\safeboot.sys file is in use.

This HPPTSM is a big mess and I am stuck in limbo (Catch 22 situation).

As far as I am concerned, almost all of DEFHPPT (files and registry values) is gone from the computer yet HPPTSM still sees DEFHPPT and won't uninstall.

The moral of the story: DO NOT TOUCH HPPTSM and it's various components (at least 6 separate software programs on my computer) !!!

The computer stills works well for everyday tasks and I am heading for LINUX when I have have some spare time to read up and inform myself on it.

So for me, this is as far as it goes and I would like to THANK-YOU once again for your great help!

Goodbye and Take Care !
