Make sure that the internals are nice and clean and that no dust has collected inside it. If you or someone who lives with you smokes this will affect the inside of the laptop even further as tar will build up in the dust and make it much worse, and often will not come out with just a can of compressed air (you'll have to wipe it off). Either way best thing to do is crack it open and clean it, and check to verify if all the fans are running ok.
If you are worried about opening your laptop, you should ask someone who knows better to do it, or leave it closed and just take a can of compressed air and while it's running blow into the air intake vents (the vents receiving air, not pushing air out) and let the fan inside push the dust out. However this still isn't the best way to clean it and it's better to open it and do it that way.
You could also just have bad hardware that diagnostic tests are not seeing, which is not uncommon for Acer products (lowest reliability scores in mass surveys). If you have a warranty with Acer you can try working with them to get a hardware repair, or better, a replacement. Most likely the video controller is bad.
