System File Checker: Corrupted Files

Tom,

MSE updated! I didn't complete all the steps listed because the program updated. Should I?

View attachment 2459

Which steps did you follow? (EDIT: Step 2, thanks) I worry that this might actually only be a false sense of security. MSE has a common updating problem where every other update attempt is supposedly successful, but was not actually, and the remainder are properly recorded as failures. I don't yet guarantee MSE is actually updated.

If you get even a single MSE install failure through Windows Update over the next few days, please let us know.

HI Richard,

Is this an accurate description of your MSE installation issues:

Try to install: fails with code.
MSE installed, but failed to update.
Try to install again: success
Windows Update now says that "no more updates are available"
Still reads that there are 6 updates (MS Office '07)
You manually click "Check for updates"
It reappears
The cycle repeats.

Is this what occurs?

You appear to have two or even three separate issues here. This is going to take a bit of fixing.
Corrine mentioned, and I believe she is correct, this might be a false positive, and wont last long. Can you explain what you think some other issues might be?

Thanks!
Don

Tom & Richard are experts when it comes to Windows Update issues. I deal with MSE when it relates to malware issues so I advise doing as they say. :)

Hi Don,

Sorry for the delay, there was a little confusion at our end I'm afraid.

Richard has kindly pointed out the problem with your CBS log, and to fix it we're going to have to uninstall Internet Explorer 9 and then 8.

Firstly, I would like you to follow these instructions to remove IE9:

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-GB/windows7/how-do-i-install-or-uninstall-internet-explorer-9

Then reboot to make sure everything is removed correctly.

Then follow these instructions to remove IE8:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/957700

Then reboot again.

You will now be all the way back to IE7, and hopefully problem free! Now we've flushed all of IE8 and IE9 out, we need to reinstall them.

To install IE8, follow the steps that you took to remove it, but this time you need to tick the box:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/957700

Then reboot and install IE9 from this link:

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-GB/internet-explorer/downloads/ie-9/worldwide-languages

After you've done all of this, could you run another sfc /scannow command and upload your CBS folder as before please?

Tom

Hi Don,

Looks like that did the trick! How is your system performing now? What happens when you try and use Windows Update?

Tom

Hello Don :)

Those logs are excellent. We are making really good progress, and I am really happy with how this is going so far.

I wouldn't be too surprised if you still have some Windows Update issues remaining, but we are making excellent headway.

Can you also get me another logfile, in addition to what Tom and Corrine have asked for?

Please copy to the Desktop, zip up, and upload:

C:\Windows\WindowsUpdate.log

Thank you.

Richard

Hi all,

Sorry it took so long to reply. Richard, you are correct. I am having the same issues with Windows Update. Corrine, I removed the gadgets after following your link. Thank you! Tom, I tried to install the updates individually as you suggested previously, but had no luck. Please let me know if I can provide any information that might help.

Best,
Don

Hello Don,

Hope you had a nice Christmas.

I'm so sorry for the delay, this thread seems to have got lost somewhere along the line. Richard and I both have exams in the near future so we have a lot to juggle at the moment and, unfortunately, sometimes things like this happen.

Are you still having issues with Windows Update?

Tom
