Unable to Update Win 8.1

Excellent!
I'll mark the thread solved. If you encounter any problems, please post back and I will continue to assist you.

OK, thanks for all the help! I will install an update and post back if there is a problem.

Looks like I have the Win update problem again, which shows Windows Update message " No updates are available" . Appears to have happened after Win updates, but I can be 100 % positive. I have left 3 optional updates uninstalled just to make sure that this message is not from the system is being up to date. I have tried rebooting. The system is also slow to access files, but the disk and memory remains below 100% utilization.

Let's verify that there haven't been any changes to the system files.

DISM /RestoreHealth Scan

Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.

  1. Right-click on the Start
    w8start.png
    button and select Command Prompt (Admin)
  2. When command prompt opens, Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Right-click > Paste) the following command into it, then press Enter

    Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

  3. When DISM finishes scanning your component store, zip up and attach your CBS log to your next post:

    C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log

Attached please find the dism zip. FYI: I am also unable to right click on files which occurred with the latest Win update problems, along with the slow file access mentioned above. I previously had some non-microsoft shell extensions disabled which fixed the right file click problem until this latest problem with Win updates.

I'll need the CBS log from C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log to determine which file(s) are missing or corrupt. :smile:

SFCFix Script

Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.

  1. Download SFCFix.exe (by niemiro) and save this to your Desktop.
  2. Download the file below, SFCFix.zip, and save this to your Desktop. Ensure that this file is named SFCFix.zip - do not rename it.
  3. Save any open documents and close all open windows.
  4. On your Desktop, you should see two files: SFCFix.exe and SFCFix.zip.
  5. Drag the file SFCFix.zip onto the file SFCFix.exe and release it.
  6. SFCFix will now process the script.
  7. Upon completion, a file should be created on your Desktop: SFCFix.txt.
  8. Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of this file into your next post for me to analyse please - put

tags around the log to break up the text.

When SFCFix has finished, run DISM again.
When DISM has completed, zip and attach C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log with your reply.

Here are the files. Any idea why the problem reoccurred or is this typical ? A hardware problem that is writing errors ?

I think it might have to do with a printer driver, though that is just a guess.

Are you now able to check for Windows Updates?

Yes, I can check for updates. File Explorer is also working now. Is there anything I can do to check/fix the printer driver ?

I'd like to check the SMART stats on your disk.

GSmartControl
Follow the instructions below to test your hard drive health with GSmartControl:

  • Download GSmartControl and save it on your Desktop;
  • Extract the content of the GSmartControl .zip archive and execute gsmartcontrol.exe; To extract you can right-click your mouse on the GSmartControl.zip file and select Extract.
  • Identify your drive in the list, and double-click on it to bring up it's window (usually you'll find your drive by it's size or it's brand name);
  • Go in the Perform Tests tab, then select Extended Self-test in the Test type drop-down list and click on Execute (this test can take a few hours to complete);
  • Once the test is over, the results will be displayed at the bottom of the window. Please copy and paste these results in your next reply;
  • Also, go in the Attributes tab and if you have any entries highlighted in red or pink, copy and paste their name in your next reply (or take a screenshot of the GSmartControl window and attach it in your next reply);
    info_failing.png

Test Result: Completed without error. Also, attached is a screen shot of the attributes.

I don't know if this a factor, but this drive is frequently at high utilization and often at 100 % for many processes. This is the bottleneck for this system , although according to the test it is not writing errors.

Sorry for the long delay.

Looks good.

I'm not sure of the cause for the corruption. One of my machines experienced the same problem today, I think it is safe to ignore.

Is everything working at this point?

No, I am unable to update again. I don't know this is related, also I have errors in Event Viewer. Most of the errors are entered several times.

Do you use sleep or hibernation? When was the last time the computer was restarted?

I use sleep at least twice per day, but no hibernation. Last restart was about two days ago and last power-down restart about a week ago.

Try restarting your computer.
Wait a couple minutes, and then check for updates.
