What was the issue that caused the error? I would like to do a clean reset on my laptop, would doing so cause similar errors?

Critical Windows Update components were missing. I simply replaced them.

It's hard to say what might happen, but I'd recommend upgrading to the latest Windows 10 build that was just released.
