[SOLVED] Unable to update Windows Update itself and other problems.

OK. Please zip up and send the following three files. You should copy them to the desktop first. You will need to show hidden files as well as Operating System files in order to see the third one. If you need help with this please ask. I think I see the issue.
C:\Windows\WindowsUpdate.log
C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log
C:\Windows\System32\SMI\Store\Machine\SCHEMA.DAT

I've confirmed that your Schema.dat file is corrupt. Please do the following.

1. Get to an elevated command-prompt again where you right-click and run as administrator.
2. Copy/Paste the following into the Command Prompt window and hit enter.
vssadmin list shadows > 1 && notepad 1

3. Notepad will open with some information in it. Please copy/paste this information into your next post. Thanks.

Sure.

It looks like the earliest restore point you have is from 5/17th. Do you happen to have any backups of your machine from earlier?

Unfortunately it doesn't appear the hive is fixable. A repair/reinstall of windows is our only recourse at this point. Do you have a Windows 8 DVD?

I don't as this laptop came installed with Windows 8. I'm guessing I'd have to buy one at this point?

So to be clear you had a Windows 8 OEM install from HP correct?

You mentioned in your original post that you tried a refresh. Have you tried a Reset? Note: Please be sure you have all your data backed up.

That's correct. I had Windows 8 installed from HP. I haven't tried resetting yet. Since Windows 8 came pre-installed, I'm assuming that I would not lose the Windows 8 OS upon resetting, correct? I understand that I'd lose everything else that didn't come pre-installed with the computer.

Correct. A reset will put it back to the way it was when it came from HP. All programs that were installed after and all data will be gone. Let's see if that works. Let me know. Again, make sure you data is backed up.

Okay, so I got around to backing up my personal files. I went to try to reset my computer, and I got a similar error as to when I tried to use the refresh option.

Checking for solutions does nothing. I'm really at a loss now.

OK, please follow these instructions.

Check to See if you have UEFI Firmware Settings
1. Press
w8start.png
-C on your keyboard to bring up the Charms bar.
2. Click the Settings button
3. Hold your Left shift button down. While holding your left shift button down, click the Power button and then choose Restart. Keep holding the Shift button down the entire time until you get a screen that says "Choose an Option"
4. Click the Troubleshoot button.
5. Click the Advanced options button.
6. Do you have a button that says UEFI Firmware Settings?

OK, good. That may come in handy later. Reboot back into Normal mode.

1. Click your Start button so the Start Screen comes up.
2. Type recovery manager and let me know if the HP Recovery Manager option is available to select.

Thanks.
