[SOLVED] Unable to use Windows Updater or enable DirectPlay

Hmm, please provide the following files if exists.

C:\$Windows.~BT\Sources\Panther\setupact.log
C:\$Windows.~BT\Sources\Panther\setuperr.log

Woops, didn't realize this went to a new page. Kept refreshing for nothing, haha... Sorry to keep you waiting.

I zipped both of them up and attached.

Thank you. I appreciate all your help. I'm on EST, so I probably won't be able to see your response until I wake up myself.

Just a note, I did delete $WINDOWS.~BT yesterday in attempt to get this to work, I don't know if that'll matter for you logs. But i do have the original folder for it still if you need it. I only deleted the visible folder for it though, it didn't seem to have much in it... I mention this because what I grabbed was from an unlisted folder and what I deleted was listed.

Hi,

The repair installation also failed because the corrupt COMPONENTS hive. What we could try is option 3 as suggested by BrianDrab in this thread. Attached a similar hive from a clean VM (Windows 10 Home 2004 - default Language Pack en-US) which I have updated to build 19041.572.

But first of all, make a complete system image and a rescue USB-stick with Macrium Reflect, just in case of a system crash or even worse. Important!

Then please replace the current hive and perform a repair install with the latest ISO (22H2).

Replace Components Hive Manually

Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.

  1. Download COMPONENTS.ZIP and save to your desktop.
  2. Right-click on it and select Extract all.... Make sure the "Show extracted files when complete" is checked and click Extract.
  3. Now we have the COMPONENTS file that we will be using to replace your current one.
  4. Navigate to C:\Windows\System32\config
  5. Right-click on the current COMPONENTS file and select rename. Rename it to COMPONENTS.bad.
Note: If you get an error that the file is in use, reboot your computer and then try again.
  6. Take the file from the Components folder on your desktop and paste it into C:\Windows\System32\config

For backing up my system, do I need a USB that's equal to the size of the entire system's data (about 565 gb, can get this down to under 512 if i uninstall some games temporarily), or will it compress the data down? I want to know if I have to buy a really nice USB stick or not. The software you suggested seems to say that I'd need the entire 565 gb as is.

I would suggest to use an External HDD / SSD rather than a USB-stick to store backups on.

When you image the current system drive with macrium reflect it will be saved as *.mrimg file which is compressed. So you can use an 2TB HDD for example or larger to store multpile backups on the same external drive.

Please be sure you use the option Image this disk and not the option "Clone this disk".

I'd have to install the HDD/SSD myself then, which I could probably do but is a bit scary... Is a USB really not an option? I can go to a best buy and buy+install a HDD i guess if that's the best choice, but... Which do you recommend anyway between SSD/HDD?

Oh wait, they have external SSDs? I'd really only be wanting to buy this for backups/storing extra things I don't use very often rather than put it into my computer itself. Having it externally too means my family could use it as well to backup their photos and other files too which would be nice. Would an external HDD/SSD be ok for this?

Yes, you can use such external HDD / SSD's perfectly well for storing backups, and they are more reliable than a USB-stick.

Ok, great. I'll head to the store then and pick one up. When I get home I'll make the backup and share an image of my settings and such for it here to make sure I did it right. Thank you again for the help, will be back in an hour or two.

Great, in the meantime I will write a summary how to image your current drive to store as backup on an external SSD.

  1. Start Macrium Reflect and select under the Local disks tab all the system partitions. (As in the screenshot above in post #29).
  2. Click on the Image this disk option and choose as destination Folder with the path specified to your external drive. E.g. D:\Backup-C\.
  3. You can specify the 'backup file name' but when you leave this option open, the backup will be saved with a default filename {IMAGE-ID}-00-00.mrimg.
  4. Click next, in the next window that appears - to plan a backup - you don't need to change antything, so click on Next.
  5. Now you will see a window with a summary of settings, click on the Finish button and then the OK to start the backup.
  6. When the backup is ready create an Rescue USB-stick from the menu of Macrium Reflect, so you can always boot from this USB-stick to recover te created image which is saved on the external drive.

Alright, so I had these settings and I'm running now:

For that last step, do I need a USB right now in case of failure, or can I just save that Rescue-USB file, then go and get one in case I actually need to use it?

Yes, you can save the Rescue-ISO of Macrium Refelect so you can build it later from another machine.

So please let me know if you ar able to perform a repair install after replacing the COMPONENSTS hive-file.

Will do, right now the backup is running. Do I need to run a repair install if I replace the components file though? Wouldn't replacing the components file be enough to fix the machine? I should be able to run windows update and anything else I may need after i just replace the components, no?

When the backup is completed, replace the COMPONENTS hive and try to perform a repair install. Don't use Windows Update to attempt to update, but perform a repair install using the ISO of Windows 10 22H2 to update the broken 2004 installation.

Windows 10 Repair Install
This will reinstall and update the operating system and fix any corruptions, without removing any file or program. But make always a backup of all your important data!
  • Go to this Microsoft page and under the title Create Windows 10 installation media press on Download tool now.
  • Save the tool on your Desktop and double click to run it.
  • On the License terms page, if you accept the license terms, select Accept.
  • On the What do you want to do page, select Create installation media (USB....) and then select Next.
  • Choose the ISO file option. Once the download is complete, right click the ISO and select the option Mount.
  • Open the Windows File Explorer and open mounted ISO, and run the setup.exe file.
  • Follow the instructions and click on the option Change what to keep.
  • Select the option Keep personal files and apps and click next.
  • Windows Setup will now start the in-place upgrade installation to repair Windows.
