Reboot is most often required - but there are still undocumented functions in the registry that aren't reflected in the GUI (such as the missing Complete Memory Dump option).

Unfortunately, the changes in dump files/dump file generation process' aren't well documented. You can discuss problems using Vista references and find that they just don't apply to Win8/8.1 For example, the DUMPxxxx.tmp file (from Server 2003) is used in 8.1 - but it's implied that it's not used in Vista.
 
I so appreciate the time you've spent over this John and just to confirm about the issue that caused all this (R9 290X BSOD). Card is faulty. User will be purchasing a different card. Amazon who was the reseller have now stopped selling R9 290X because of all the negative feedback (whther that's worldwide I'm unsure but it's what they told my user who resides in France.)
