Hi there, we tried the June 2006 security cumulative update KB5461666 and the server went to reboot to complete the process and then post reboot gave a message before the login screen saying "We couldn't complete the update undoing changes" Then when you go to update history it says successfully installed but when you check for updates, it shows the update as required to be installed.

We installed from .NET patches that were there KB3135994, KB4556401 and KB4535104 and they appear to be installed correctly and do not appear again upon checking updates.

There are still 40 optional updates that we had previously installed that are still saying they require installing.

Any ideas what's next step?

We also installed the July 2020 security cumulative update and the same issue happened. Any ideas?

Hi,

Apologies for bothing you again, were you able to get a chance to look at the logs I uploaded last week?

Thanks,
Shane

Hi!

The Server will automatically reboot after running the fix.

Then retry the update and attach CBS and setupapi.dev.log if it fails.

Step#1 - FRST Fix
NOTICE: This script was written specifically for this user, for use on that particular machine. Running this on another machine may cause damage to your operating system
1. Please download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your Desktop.
Note: You need to run the 64-bit Version so please ensure you download that one.
2. Download the attached fixlist.txt and save it to the Desktop.
Note. It's important that both files, FRST64 and fixlist.txt are in the same location or the fix will not work (in this case...the desktop).
3. Run FRST64 by Right-Clicking on the file and choosing Run as administrator.
4. Press the Fix button just once and wait. If for some reason the tool needs a restart, please make sure you let the system restart normally. After that let the tool complete its run.
5. When finished FRST64 will generate a log on the Desktop (Fixlog.txt). Please post the contents of it in your reply.

Hi there,

Thanks for the steps. I have run the fix again this evening, the logs are pasted below:

The system needed a reboot.

==== End of Fixlog 19:10:20 ====

After this I rebooted the server and checked for updates, and attempted to install the latest 'important' updates. Unfortunately, it looks like they have also failed.

I have grabbed the CBS and setupapi.dev.log as requested and uploaded them here: CBSandSetupAPIDevLogs-21082020.zip

Thanks again for all the help, let me know if you need any additional information!

Thanks,
Shane

Hi there,

Apologies for that - looks like I copied over the ZIP a little too soon, before it had finished processing.

Here is a fresh one that should contain all the files you need: CBSandSetupAPIDevLogs-27082020.zip

Let me know if this one is OK or if you need anything else from me.

Thanks,
Shane
