Updating AMD/ATI cards, 'drivers only'.

I think this URL needs changing: Support & Drivers - it looks like the forum software triggers a redirect to: Support & Drivers <- can you check this out, please, it might just be something on my end?

I don't think the main procedure has changed and the hidden laptop specific section seems to be the same as that currently displayed on the site.

That's nothing to do with the forum software, it's a redirect at AMD's end. The cause is actually because they've subtly changed their URL structure. The new URL is http://support.amd.com/en-us/kb-articles/Pages/GPU57RemoveOldGraphicsDrivers.aspx.

I'll get it corrected.

Thread resurrection ahoy!

I am following the procedure for a driver only installation (just installed an HD 5450). The procedure can also be found at this sticky:

I am stuck at Point 6, where it says to click on Display Adapters. I am on XP and therefore do not have that option. At least I think that's the reason! What I do have is two different options listed under "Other Devices". One says "PCI Device" and the other says "Video Controller (VGA Compatible)". They both refer to the same PCI Slot and I am guessing one of them is what I need to use to point to the driver. I just don't know which one seeing as they both point to the same thing...

If anyone could help that would be great.

Could you please tell your laptop/system model?

Kindly report back the Vendor ID (It's the 4 digit part after VID_ and before &PID. So, in the guide, the vendor ID of the example provided is 0A5C.) of both the devices you are observing in Device Manager according to the below guide -
How to Find Device ID?s to Resolve Unknown Device Problems

Once you find out the Vendor ID, check it over here - PCI Vendor and Device Lists
Put the vendor ID in the Vendor Search. If it turns out to be ATI, then bingo, you hit the jackpot. Just install the driver for the device and follow the rest of the guide.

Hi there

My system is a self build with the following Spec:

Intel DP35DP
Intel Q6600
4 GB RAM Corsair
3x Hard Drives (2TB, 500GB, 500GB). All WD.
HD 5450 GC.
EMU 1820M Audio Interface.

Let me know if you need more info or more specifics about the info given.

I have followed the procedure and both devices give the same Vendor ID. I half guessed they would because they both point to the same PCI slot. I'm pretty certain both devices relate to the GC... I just don't know which one to use in the driver installation process.

Here are screenshots of the two Hardware IDs:

Step 6 is looking for the video/graphics/display adapter so you can click on it to manually install the driver.
I'd guess that you could click on either one (as you state that they point to the same thing), but to be safe just right click on the one that says Video Adapter.

To be safe, set a System Restore point prior to doing this.

If for any strange reason it is wrong and I should have chosen the other one, will it just not work? Or could it create a major balls up?

Yup. That's your ATI Device. Go ahead and install the driver and let us know in case you find any problem. I just wanted to make sure that you do not accidentally install a driver on the Internal Graphics (Embedded on the motherboard) :)

Yup that's it. That was probably a typo from John's part. But, like John said, it is always better to create the System Restore Point before installing the drivers, just in case it is needed.

If any further doubts/problems, do not hesitate to post back ^_^
 
Great - thanks for confirming.

Unfortunately though I have now fallen at the next hurdle. Sorry to keep hassling you guys! But it seems the procedure is different for XP.

So...

I have right clicked Video Controller and chosen Update Driver.
When Windows asks if it can connect to Windows Update, I have said No.
The next screen asks whether I want to "Install the SW automatically" or "Install from a specific location". I have chosen the latter.
I am then presented with this screen:

Presumably browsing is the right option, so I browse for the folder created in previous steps, but when I select it the OK button is still greyed out. As I delve into the subfolders, the OK button remains greyed out.

There are some folders in the Drivers folder but most of these leave the OK button greyed. In fact, only two folders will allow me to hit OK: XP6A_INF and XP_INF:

Am I barking up the wrong tree completely? Is it a case of the procedure not being possible in XP?

Any help most gratefully received at this stage.

There is no option to include the Subfolders option?

That is really confusing. If I were to guess, I would try both the options but I would go with the XP_INF folder first.
 
No Subfolders option as far as I can see. I will double check though.

OK, if I'm feeling brave I'll give it a go with the XP_INF folder. Presumably then everything else in the parent AMD folder is either for CCC or irrelevant?
 
XP_INF is for 32-bit Windows, XP6A_INF is for 64-bit.

XP loads drivers via the associated *inf/cat files.

I've also had success using the 'Let me choose' method > Have disk and pointing to the .inf file location, a popup should then give you a list of devices in the .inf to choose from (if memory serves correct, it's been some time since I did either on XP).

Either method should ignore the 'extra's' like CCC and load only the drivers plus hotkey switching - but I can't guarantee it :)
 
Right guys... Finally got back from work.... Finally got time to get back to the PC.....

I installed the driver onto "Video Controller (VGA Compatible)" instead of "PCI Device" as suggested (see above). And I manually pointed to XP_INF as per the previous post. I did not get a pop up or anything like that. It just went straight through and installed the driver. After a couple of tweaks in the display properties to get settings right and configure the dual monitors, all is now well.

BUT... (there had to be a but)!

In Device Manager I've still got a yellow question mark over Other Devices > PCI Device. And each time I reboot I get am "Install New Hardware Wizard". Which is all strange because the PCI Device IS the Graphics Card, as we established before.

I'm wondering if perhaps I should have run the Update Driver on PCI Device instead of "Video Controller (VGA Compatible)"? Or maybe I should go through the procedure a second time, this time on PCI Device? Or perhaps you guys have other ideas?

In case it helps, as things are now:

PCI Device (with yellow question mark) Location says: PCI Slot 11 (PCI Bus 1, device 0, function 1)

Display Adapter for HD 5450 Location says: PCI Slot 11 (PCI Bus 1, device 0, function 0)
