Hello Maxstar, CH Michael, and the entire community,

I am a company IT Manager, and for days I have been trying to resolve a critical issue on a Windows Server 2016 Essentials system with a corrupted image. I came across the case resolved on September 11, 2022, by CH Michael and attempted to follow the procedure outlined, but I was unable to complete it successfully, particularly the part involving sending the COMPONENTS file in ZIP format.

Below is a summary of everything I have done so far:

DISM /RestoreHealth Error: I executed the command using several original ISOs of Windows Server 2016, including the latest available update (10.0.14393.7515), but I keep receiving the error 0x800f0831. I specified the source with /Source, but the issue persists.
Cumulative Updates and Servicing Stack: I installed the latest cumulative updates (KB5046612, KB5046266, and others) and the servicing stack to ensure the system is up-to-date. Unfortunately, the image has not been repaired.
Diagnostic Tools: I ran both SFC /scannow and DISM, but neither resolved the issue.
Attempt to Upgrade to Windows Server 2016 Standard: I tried using DISM /Set-Edition:ServerStandard, but the process failed with the same error (0x800f0831).
Backup of COMPONENTS File via RegBak: I attempted to create a backup of the COMPONENTS file following the procedure described in your forum, but I encountered technical issues completing the step to send it to you in ZIP format.
The server is currently updated to the latest build (14393.7515), and I am trying to avoid a clean installation to preserve critical business applications, files, and configurations.

Question: Is there an alternative way to resolve this issue? Can I provide additional details (DISM logs, CBS logs, etc.) or receive guidance on creating the COMPONENTS file to send it to you for deeper analysis?

Thank you very much for your support. Your expertise is my last hope for resolving this issue.

Best regards,
Michele

Please provide the previous CBS logs as well.

Upload a copy of the CBS folder
  • Open Windows Explorer and browse to the C:\Windows\Logs folder.
  • Right-click on the CBS folder and choose Send to > Compressed (zipped) folder.
  • Now the message will appear, "Windows cannot create the Compressed (zipped) Folder here. Do you want it to be placed on the desktop instead?"
  • Click on the Yes button here.
