The instructions are provided on the link. Please let me know which part you don't understand.

Sorry, I first responded to message and then saw the link. :thud:

Update msconfig as mentioned in the article for clean boot and booted the system. CheckSUR utility completed in about 3 minutes. The hotfix also completed in about 15 minutes or so.

Please find attached the CBS log (after clean boot); also, Checksur and checksur.persist log.

One request - Once this issue is fixed, I would like to spend some time with you to understand what's the issue I encountered.

GSmartControl
Follow the instructions below to test your hard drive health with GSmartControl:

  • Download GSmartControl and save it on your Desktop;
  • Execute gsmartcontrol.exe; Let the install complete and launch the programme.
  • Identify your drive in the list, and double-click on it to bring up it's window (usually you'll find your drive by it's size or it's brand name);
  • Go in the Perform Tests tab, then select Extended Self-test in the Test type drop-down list and click on Execute (this test can take a few hours to complete);
  • Once the test is over, the results will be displayed at the bottom of the window. Please copy and paste these results in your next reply;
  • Also, go in the Attributes tab and if you have any entries highlighted in red or pink, take a screenshot of the GSmartControl window and attach it in your next reply;

I have Seagate/WD utility since my Disk is Seagate. Would that not work?

Also, the GSmartControl - I presume this is non-destructive testing ?

Warm Regards,

Ravi

I need to see SMART parametars that's why I recommend this one. Every HDD test can be destructive in a way, so it's important to have backups. If you do not have one, please do create it prior to beginning the test.

What made me have you test the drive was the fact that there were so many corrupt files and the fact that you've told me that chkdsk found errors.

The extended test and the conveyance test did not complete. Failed with read error at LBA 22984088 - This seems to be at the beginning of the disk and may be within area where windows is installed.

But the overall status in GSmartControl is Pass.

Please find attached word doc with screen shots.

Warm Regards,

Ravi

I understand.

The first time, when the CHKDSK was Auto-recommended, it did not complete correctly. Then I went through the windows install disk, selected the utilities and ran chkdsk through one of the menu option (Not able to recollect at the moment. But, it's part of recovery utilities menu in Startup Recovery). That after 1 or 2 retries, worked successfully. Post that CHKDSK is working ok and shows no errors.

Could LBA address mentioned in my other answer, be a non-relocatable block in Windows? As I understand, OSs do have these blocks for some specific functions/code where they need specific address on disk to access the function/code.

Warm Regards,

Ravi

That's what I'm trying to check. Please provide a screenshot from the Attriibutes Tab.

Here are the outputs - attributes data saved from the tool and screen shots of attributes data.

The reallocated sector count is way above but no SMART warning.

similarly, current pending sector count and offline uncorrectable are indicated with pink BG.

Warm Regards,

Ravi

PS: I will now be away for my work. Would be able to connect only in late afternoon time-frame in your area.

Yes, your HDD is damaged and if possible, I'd get it replaced. The situation is only going to worsen really. Make sure you have good backups of your data handy.

OK. Thank you.

Will discuss with you in the late afternoon (European Time Zone) about ways to migrate my current Windows and setups to new disk. I do have a spare 1.5 TB UNUSED disk.

But, does Windows 7 support more that 3 TB storage on SATA? I had read in some note that maximum, it can support 3 TB.

Warm Regards,

Ravi

To Clone windows setup from current drive to a similar capacity drive (80 GB or 120GB separate drive), what tool you would suggest?

This will be a weekend activity for me though.

Warm Regards,

Ravi
