This doesn't look good at all, and it seems this system in pretty broken! Do you have recent backups before the issue started?

I do have backups, although when exactly the issue started is not entirely clear to me at the moment.

The system is still working 'fine' from a user perspective, it is just Windows Update that has issues.

I guess I could try restoring in 30 day blocks (e.g. revert 1 month and try Windows Update)

If not working, revert 2 months and so on.

Looking at the CBS hive the backup from December should be fine, it seems the problems started with the January update. Another option would be to perform an in-place-upgrade.

Thanks for the insight.

I have December backups.

I'll try a test restore to a VM tomorrow and see if Windows Update runs OK.

If not, when you say in-place upgrade to W10 or W11?

i.e. W10 -> W10 which would be my preference on this system

or W10 -> W11?

I would first use the Windows 10 22H2 ISO to perform an in-place-upgrade, if it resolved all the issues you can create new backup. Than you can decide to upgrade to Windows 11 if this system meets the hardware requirements for Windows 11.
