I am on my very best behaviour - I don't even touch the computer until you tell me to
Checking now . . . . . but if previous attempts are anything to go by it may take a while.
it's been checking for 20 minutes now so I expect its stuck especially as there is no sign of activity in task manager
I think I've seen the wermgr.exe flash across task manager past a couple of times.
Anyway I think its stuck. I'll leave it on all night and confirm in the morning
The following morning the computer had shut itself down.

Good that Windows Update finishes this time.
Set the Windows Update setting at Download updates but let me choose whether to install them.

It seems that the default setting under power options is "when plugged in - turn off after 360 minutes" so I suspect Windows Update was stuck and power plan options turned off the machine.
Ive now changed it to 'never'!
after 10 hours of checking, it is still checking!
There are no signs of an activity in Task manager (other than taskmgr itself) so I think we can safely assume WU has stopped.
there are no critical or error entries in the event log since WU started so WU seems simply to have gone to sleep rather than died a violent death!!
Clearly not much.
DISm kicked off (the usual Iage version etc etc) and then did nothing for 10 minutes
Taskmgr report 0 CPU and no change in I/O bytes read, written or other and then
