[Win10ProV1703b15063 x64] WU Sep 17 KB4038788 failed. Error 0x80070002.

Good news. I went back and toggled the buttons on the services page of the system configuration screen and was able to get the Enable button to display. I made sure the Hide box was unticked again, and that all the start-up programs in the Task Manager were enabled and then clicked the OK button and rebooted the computer. Everything seems to be back to normal again. MalwareBytes and WinPatrol are back on duty, so I'm feeling safe to browse again. :)

I am closing down for the night. I will check this topic tomorrow to see if I should still run the MediaCreationTool. (And maybe do some current backups while I'm waiting.....)

The Media Creation Tool has completed. It closed after checking for updates. I received no further prompts or messages. Computer function is normal. Update history is intact, and showing a failed update for today's date.

Since you did not specify to right click and run the tool as administrator, I just opened it and ran. My account already has privileges. My settings provide a check screen to allow apps to make changes to the computer, so I allowed. Here is the sequence as I remember it:

Upgrade this PC now > Next
Downloading Windows 10 > completed 100%
Accepted license agreement >
Getting updates: completed 100% >
Installing: Did not warn of computer restarting. Computer did not restart. Did not ask for restart upon completion>
Checking for updates: completed >
Window closed.

Eureka! My computer is now up to date. :D

Here is the sequence (I took better notes this time):

On my update page, this is what was offered:
Definition Update for Windows Defender - KB2267602 (Definition 1.253.231.0)
Different cumulative update is being downloaded--the Sept 25th one instead of the Sept 12th one:
• 2017-09 Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 1703 for x64-based Systems (KB4040724)

The progress bar (which had stopped working is now showing the color bar and percentages.
It stuck at 26% progress for a long time and then at 35% the definition update was added to the list. Eventually completed to 100%.

Preparing to install updates > completed to 100%.
Then checking for updates began again.

Result: A restart is required to finish installing the following updates.
• 2017-09 Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 1703 for x64-based Systems (KB4040724)

After (really long) restart, the only desktop difference I noticed is that the MalwareBytes icon loaded in the tray first, even before Defender. Usually it has been the last icon to appear. I checked my MB settings to see if "self protection early start module" had been toggled on somehow, but it had not. I don't know if this is important or not, so reporting it.

This is the Update History entry after the restart:
• 2017-09 Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 1703 for x64-based Systems (KB4040724)
Successfully installed on 10/3/2017

Update Status: Your device is up to date.
It then spontaneously started checking for updates....apparently found none and repeated the Your device is up to date message with current time.

If that Media Creation Tool reinstalled Windows 10 for me, I have to say that was really a painless process and didn't seem to mess anything up. What a great tool.

Is it possible I was offered the wrong update (KB4038788) for my computer in Sept? I'm asking because one of my other failed updates turned out to not be compatible with my computer.

I have not opted into the Windows Insider updates, and I also have the business track selected which delays installation of new features until tested a while. However, after reading about the Sept 12th cumulative update, it seems it was very buggy and caused lots of problems for people. Maybe I'm glad I couldn't install it.

Is there anything more I need to do?

Hello, I'm very glad to hear that you are no more experiencing issues and that everything is working as it should.

A point of note, though, I would not recommend you using Windows Insider updates, because they are essentially beta software intended for more tech-savvy people.

I hope everything goes well from now on. Stay safe,
Mihael

Thank you so much for your expert help! I'm so relieved to have things working properly again. :)

I have no intention of opting into anything beta, no worries! I just wondered if that would affect which updates I might be getting and if I had been given a wrong one for my setup.

I guess it really doesn't matter, as everything worked as it should now.

Again, thank you. I appreciate your kindness as well as your expert advice.

I do have another question about updates. Every time I ran the Windows Update troubleshooter, it would find and fix the same problems, except it would not fix the one that was listed as:
Windows could not automatically detect this network's proxy settings -!

To see if anything has changed, I ran the troubleshooter again just now. It found the same 3 problems as before the successful update install. (I did not let it fix anything yet since I just wanted to see what it had to say.)

Is this something I should pursue? And if so is it a network issue or an update issue?

Believe it or not that's normal behavior for that tool and nothing to be concerned with. It's a little misleading I agree but everything looks good now. Take care.
