[SOLVED] [Win10v1607b14393 x64] SFC Corruption

Re: SFC Corruption

Thanks. I need to take a look at your Software hive as well.

Step#1 - Retrieve Software Hive
Note: The Software have has confidential and sensitive information in it so please send me a PM with a link to the hive so it's not in the public form.
  • Please download the Freeware RegBak from here: Acelogix Software - Download products
You will find it at the bottom of the page that the link brings you to.
  • Go ahead and install this program and accept all the defaults. After the last install screen the program should open.
  • Click the New Backup button. Accept the defaults and simply click Start.
  • When it says Finished successfully, click the Close button.
  • This will bring you back to the main screen of the program. You will see one entry in this list with the date that you did it. Right-click on this line-item and select Explore Backup...
  • This will bring you into the folder where the backup was made. You should see a Users folder and a Windows folder along with a couple other files. Double-click on the Windows folder to open it. Then open the System32 folder and then config folder. You should see around 6 files in here, one of which is named SOFTWARE.
  • Copy this file to your Desktop.
  • Now right click on this file on your desktop and select Send to > Compressed (zipped) folder.
  • Then please upload the zip file(s) to your favourite file sharing website (it will be too big to upload here). Examples of services to upload to are Dropbox or One Drive or SendSpace and then just PM me your link.
  • You can close any open windows you have as well as the RegBak program now.

Re: SFC Corruption

Please do the following.

Step#1 - SFCFix Script
Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.
  1. Download SFCFix.exe (by niemiro) and save this to your Desktop. If you still have this on your desktop from downloading previously, you don't need to re-download.
  2. Download the file below, SFCScript.txt, and save this to your Desktop.
  3. Save any open documents and close all open windows.
  4. On your Desktop, you should see two files: SFCFix.exe and SFCScript.txt.
  5. Drag the file SFCScript.txt onto the file SFCFix.exe and release it.
  6. SFCFix will now process the script.
  7. Upon completion, a file should be created on your Desktop: SFCFix.txt.
  8. Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of this file into your next post for me to analyse please

Re: SFC Corruption

Chkdsk and SFC scans still OK, Windows Update still trying and failing to install KB3206632. (Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 1607 for x64-based Systems (KB3206632) - Error 0x800736b3)

Re: SFC Corruption

Understood. Please do the following again.

Reboot. Attempt to install KB3206632 again and then provide the CBS.log once if fails.

Re: SFC Corruption

I did a clean boot, ran chkdsk and SFC again, ran the windows update troubleshooter. Windows Update hung on downloading KB3206632 so I tried using the standalone installer, which failed.

Re: SFC Corruption

I think things went wrong somehwere in Post#47. I think there are a log of missing registry entries. I recommend we try the following.

1. Download the Media Creation Tool to your desktop. Go ahead and run this. Note: Click the Download tool now button when you are at this link.
2. Accept the license agreement
3. Keep the default which is to Upgrade your PC and click Next.
4. Go ahead and run this through and let me know when complete.

Doing it this way will keep all your data and programs intact. As always though, make sure you have a backup of any critical data in case something unexpected happens.

Re: SFC Corruption

I followed your instructions and re-installed Windows 10. Everything went well. Windows Update installed several updates and now reports my computer is up to date. Chkdsk reports no problems. Unfortunately, when I ran system file checker, I got two blue screen crashes and a report that it could not continue before finally getting it to complete. However it reported that it had found corrupt files that it could not fix.

Crazy!

I am attaching the CBS log.

Please Note:: if the file is too big to upload to your next post please upload via a service such as Dropbox or One Drive or SendSpace and just provide the link.

Re: SFC Corruption

SFC still reporting corrupt files it cannot fix.

By the way, I tried running SCFFix without a script file (after running the script file you sent me in post #90.) It crashed. I don't know if that is significant.

Also, I had disk cleanup remove my old windows installations. The computer seems more stable now.

I did request this in Post#94 but you may have missed it.

The symptoms I'm seeing are almost always attributed to bad memory in the computer. Please run the following fix and follow-up with another SFC scan and provide logs.

Re: SFC Corruption

Are you able to try the following and let me know the results?

Test RAM With Memtest86+

Please ensure you allow 8 passes of the program!

Download Memtest86+ here:
Memtest86+ - Advanced Memory Diagnostic Tool

Which should I download?

You can either download the pre-compiled .ISO that you would burn to a CD and then boot from the CD, or you can download the auto-installer for the USB key. What this will do is format your USB drive, make it a bootable device, and then install the necessary files. Both do the same job, it's just up to you which you choose, or which you have available (whether it's CD or USB).

Do note that some older generation motherboards do not support USB-based booting, therefore your only option is CD (or Floppy if you really wanted to).

How Memtest works (you don't need to read, it's only for those interested in the specifics):

Memtest uses algorithms (specifically two), namely moving inversion & what is deemed Modulo-X. Essentially, the first algorithm fills the memory with a pattern. Starting at the low address, it checks to see if the pattern was changed (it should not have been), writes the patterns complement, increments the address, and repeats. Starting at the highest address (as opposed to the lowest), it follows the same checklist.

The reason for the second algorithm is due to a few limitations, with the first being that not all adjacent cells are being tested for interaction due to modern chips being 4 to 16 bits wide regarding data storage. With that said, patterns are used to go ahead and ensure that all adjacent cells have at least been written with all possible one and zero combinations.

The second is that caching, buffering and out of order execution will interfere with the moving inversions algorithm. However, the second algorithm used is not affected by this. For starting offsets of 0-20, the algorithm will write every 20th location with a pattern, write all other locations with the patterns complement, repeat the previous one (or more) times, and then check every 20th location for the previously mentioned pattern.

Now that you know how Memtest actually works, it's important to know that the tests it goes through all mean something different. It goes from Test 0 through Test 12, many of which use either one or the other algorithm discussed above, among many other things.

Any other questions, they can most likely be answered by reading this great guide here:

Test RAM With Memtest86+

Re: SFC Corruption

I made both a boot cd and a boot usb. I ran Memtest86+ several times for about 20 minutes each. It picked up errors at a rate of about 1000 per minute. It certainly seems I have a problem with my ram (or the motherboard, or the processor.) Curiously Windows Memory Diagnostic picks up no errors, although I only ran the standard test.

Given how many errors Memtest86+ reports, it is amazing that the computer even boots up.

I may try re-seating the ram and then testing one ram module at a time to see if just one of them is defective, but probably it is a waste of time. Better to just get a new and up-to-date machine.

By the way, I ran Memtest86+ on my laptop. It found no errors at all.

I don't suppose there is anything further Sysnative.com can do for me, although if that is not the case please let me know. Many thanks for your efforts. I greatly appreciate them.
