Win7 SP1 64-BIT - Code 8007370D Windows Update Encountered an unknown error

Replace Components Hive

Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.

  1. Download COMPONENTS.ZIP and save it to your desktop.
  2. Right-click on it and select Extract all.... Make sure the "Show extracted files when complete" is checked and click Extract.
  3. Now we have the COMPONENTS file that we will be using to replace your current one.
  4. Navigate to C:\Windows\System32\config
  5. Right-click on the current COMPONENTS file and select rename. Rename it to COMPONENTS.bad.
Note: If you get an error that the file is in use, reboot your computer and then try again.
  6. Take the file from the Components folder on your desktop and paste it into C:\Windows\System32\config
Let me know if the hive was replaced or if there were any errors.

I have not been getting errors since the first time I replaced the components file over a week ago, so I don't know if the hive was replaced. If you're asking whether I was able to complete steps 1-6, then the answer is YES.

Great. Run the SURT tool again to verify the fixes and look for remaining issues.

Start the System Update Readiness Tool (SURT) again.
On completion, attach the logfile C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log to your next reply.

I ran the SURT/Windows6.1-KB947821-v34-x64.msu file again. Attached is the file you requested. There's also a CheckSur.Persistent.log file. Let me know if you want to see that. Thank you.

My outlook gave me VB.DLL errors after I ran the SURT 11/19/20 after rebooting, so I did a SYSTEM RESTORE to a restore point i created prior to running the SURT tool on 11/19. Today I did follow steps 1-7 above. After FixLog.txt was created FixList.txt was automatically deleted or removed. attached is the file you requested.
