Win7 x64 - 4 updates fail w/ error 80073712 - kb2863058 kb2832414 kb2862966 kb2872339

Hi Gary,

You missed Step #5 but not to worry, it's close enough. All of the values I suspected were missing are in fact there, so it isn't as easy as I first thought. If there was one or two errors of this kind, tracking them down and fixing them would be a perfectly reasonable route to take, but 140 is just too many to fix. I'm sorry but you'll have to do a repair install:

Tom,
Many thanks for your help. I'm sorry it turned into such a big problem. Hopefully the inplace upgrade will work.
Gary

Tom,

No unfortunately it didn't. It stopped just after "checking compatibility" and reported a confusing error that says:

Code:
[TABLE]
[TR]
[TD]The following issues are preventing Windows from upgrading. Cancel the upgrade, complete each task, and then restart the upgrade to continue.
[/TD]
[/TR]
[/TABLE]

[LIST]
[*]You can’t upgrade 64-bit Windows to a 32-bit version of Windows. To upgrade, obtain a 64-bit version of the installation disc, or [URL="http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=142337"]go online[/URL] to see how to install Windows 7 and keep your files and settings.
[*]32-bit Windows cannot be upgraded to a 64-bit version of Windows. To upgrade, obtain a 32-bit version of the Windows installation disc.

[LIST]
[*]Windows needs to be restarted so necessary changes to system files can be made before continuing.

Do you have any other suggestions that I might try?

Thanks,
Gary

Hi Gary,

What disc are you using? Those errors suggest that you are using an x86 disc to repair an x64 computer.

Tom

Tom,

Disc is Win7 SP 1 x64... It's the original disc from the manufacturer. The confusing part is that the installer error says "both" you can't upgrade 32 bit to 64 bit AND you can't upgrade 64 bit to 32 bit... :(

System is Win 7 SP 1 Pro x64

Thanks,
Gary

Hi Gary,

Is this disc just x64, or is it both x86 and x64? I have done a little research on this problem and have found that some discs are shipped containing x86 and x64. As x86 Windows can't run x64 exe files, the setup.exe is an x86 file which runs on both x86 and x64 installations of Windows. The only downfall of this is when the user needs to perform an upgrade as the file is run from within Windows and not at boot, and the upgrade fails because it's running an x86 file on an x64 computer and thinks it's incompatible.

But this whole theory is void if your disc is just x64!

Tom

Tom,

You called it! Well the disk is clearly labeled "this disk contains 64 bit software only" and "Win 7 Professional SP1 x64" but....
dumpbin says setup.exe is 32bit!
