[SOLVED] Win7 x86 will not install security updates after interrupted update install

I tried to uninstall the language packs. The system indicated they could not be uninstalled as follows:

I saved a copy of the CBS log that was created right after the failed attempt. I don't know if you need it but here it is just in case:

Next I rebooted, and tried to install the updates as I would before.
It offered me several updates I had previously hidden along with the whole list of language packs except for the ones it already had installed.

I hid all the language packs, and hid a couple of the updates I did not want, specifically the KB2952664 as I am not interested in microsoft rummaging thru my machine.

The update failed in the usual way, with all the updates installing EXCEPT the security updates.

Attempt only KB4054518 with ProcMon and provide the following info as well:

Retrieve Components Hive
 1. Navigate to C:\Windows\System32\Config and locate the COMPONENTS file.
2. Please copy this file to your desktop.
Note: If you receive an error that this file is in-use, simply reboot your computer and try again.
3. Right-click on this file on your desktop and select Send To...Compressed (zipped) folder. This will create a file named COMPONENTS.ZIP on your desktop.
4. The file will likely be too large to upload here so please upload to a file sharing service and just provide the link here.


Step#2 - Export SideBySide




  1. Click on the Start button and in the search box, type regedit
  2. When you see regedit on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator
  3. When regedit opens, using the left pane, navigate to the following registry key and select it by clicking on it once.

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\SideBySide
  4. Once selected, click File > Export....
  5. Change the Save as type: to Registry Hive Files (*.*)
  6. Name this file SxS (with no file extension) and save it to your Desktop.



Once done please upload this file via Dropbox or One Drive or SendSpace.

I ran the update for only KB4054518 as requested, it failed but with a different error: 8024AFFF

Also here is the zipfile containing both the components hive and the SxS registry export. These were made before the update attempt, let me know if you need one from after it was done.

I ran the update again with one the single security package selected KB4054518 and it generated a log very similar to the above one with the same error 8024AFFF.

I then re-ran the update with the other packages selected: KB4480970, and a definition update for windows defender.

This time it reported error 8007371B as before. I have zipped and attached both CBS logs from the first and second attempt.

Thanks, but I really need you to follow my instructions from the post above and provide a copy of your whole CBS folder as I have requested. It will likely be too big for you to attach, but you can use a file sharing service.
 
Let's see if this does anything:

SFCFix Script

Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.


  1. Download SFCFix.exe (by niemiro) and save this to your Desktop.
  2. Download the attached file, SFCFixScript.txt, and save this to your Desktop. Ensure that this file is named SFCFixScript.txt - do not rename it.
  3. Save any open documents and close all open windows.
  4. On your Desktop, you should see two files: SFCFix.exe and SFCFixScript.txt.
  5. Drag the file SFCFixScript.txt onto the file SFCFix.exe and release it.
  6. SFCFix will now process the script.
  7. Upon completion, a log should be created on your Desktop: SFCFix.txt.
  8. Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of this into your next post for me to analyse please - put [CODE][/CODE] tags around the log to break up the text.
