  1. Click on the Start button and in the search box, type Command Prompt
  2. When you see Command Prompt on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator
  3. When command prompt opens, copy and paste the following commands into it, press enter after each

cd c:\windows\system32\config

wait a few seconds then when a new line appears copy and paste:

dir /s >%userprofile%\desktop\listmyfolder.txt

You should then see a file on your desktop called: listmyfolder.txt

Attach it to your next reply.

Welcome back!

FRST Fix
NOTICE: This script was written specifically for this user, for use on that particular machine. Running this on another machine may cause damage to your operating system
1. Download attached file and save it to the Desktop.
Note. It's important that both files, FRST64 and fixlist.txt are in the same location or the fix will not work (in this case...the desktop).
2. Run FRST64 by Right-Clicking on the file and choosing Run as administrator.
3. Press the Fix button just once and wait. If for some reason the tool needs a restart, please make sure you let the system restart normally. After that let the tool complete its run.
4. When finished FRST64 will generate a log on the Desktop (Fixlog.txt). Please post the contents of it in your reply.
5. In addition there will be a zip file on your desktop in the format of Date_Time.zip. Please attach that as well.

Hello,

here is the content of the fixlog.txt

Entferungsergebnis von Farbar Recovery Scan Tool (x64) Version: 20-08-2017

C:\Windows\System32\Config\COMPONENTS => erfolgreich verschoben

==== Ende von Fixlog 08:12:40 ====

The file C:\Windows\System32\Config\COMPONENTS is not in the folder. Only the files COMPONENTS.log, COMPONENTS.log1 and COMPONENT.log2. In the generated zip-file are only the files from the desktop.

That's strange. In your previous step, we were able to see the COMPONENTS hive, but when we tried to zip it up and inspect it, it wasn't there.
Could you please repeat my instructions from Post #22 to check that the file is still there?

I think the posted components-file is not usefull. After copying the file I had to make a system recovery because Windows Update stopped working and sfc /scannow didn't work too. After restoring they worked again. Now is the component file is larger as the posted one but I am not able to copy it and in the FRST is no FIX-button?!
What should we do?

  • Please download the Freeware RegBak from here: Acelogix Software - Download products
You will find it at the bottom of the page that the link brings you to.
  • Go ahead and install this program and accept all the defaults. After the last install screen the program should open.
  • Click the New Backup button. Accept the defaults and simply click Start.
  • When it says Finished successfully, click the Close button.
  • This will bring you back to the main screen of the program. You will see one entry in this list with the date that you did it. Right-click on this line-item and select Explore Backup...
  • This will bring you into the folder where the backup was made. You should see a Users folder and a Windows folder along with a couple other files. Double-click on the Windows folder to open it. Then open the System32 folder and then config folder. You should see around 6 files in here, one of which is named COMPONENTS.
  • Copy the COMPONENTS file to your Desktop. If the COMPONENTS file does not exist, please fetch it instead from C:\Windows\System32\config\COMPONENTS.
  • Now right click on the COMPONENTS file that is on your desktop and select Send to > Compressed (zipped) folder.
  • Then please upload the zip file (COMPONENTS.zip) to your favourite file sharing website (it will be too big to upload here). Examples of services to upload to are Dropbox or One Drive or SendSpace and then just provide the link in your reply.
  • You can close any open windows you have as well as the RegBak program now.

I am sorry but it doesn't work. The file COMPONENTS is missing in the backup folder.

I have downloaded and installed the software RegBak as explained in your post.
After this I created a backup by clicking the buttons "New Backup" and "Start". The Backup finished succesfully and with "Close" I came back to the main menu and with right-click and "Explore Backup" I navigate to the System32 - config folder. There are the files, SAM, SOFTWARE, SYSTEM etc. but the file COMPONETS is missing. Sorry.

OK, after using FRST the file component was missing in the generated zipfile and in the C:\Windows\System32\config folder. After a restart there was a new and smaller COMPONENT file in the config folder. I was able to copy this new file to desktop but then I noticed that windows update wasn't working. I got an error message that no updates can be searched. Sorry I've forgotten the number from the mistake. To fix the error I tried to use the sfc /scannow but it doesn't work, too. After this I recover the PC to an 2 day old recovery point. After recovering windows update worked again and the old COMPONENT file was in the config folder, with the problem that I couldn't copy the file to the desktop and so on.
I hope I could help you with my explanation.
