[SOLVED] [Win8.1] KB2919355 Update: failure to configure updates, reverting changes

Re: KB2919355 Update Win 8.1: failure to configure updates, reverting changes

Hi GTP :-)

I'm getting an error when I try that from the command prompt in the recovery environment. I tried it twice in case I made a mistaking typing it out. I have Windows installed in the standard c:\Windows directory

Error: 2
Unable to access the image.
Make sure you have the image path and the Windows directory for the image exist and you have Read permissions on that folder.

Hi LP :)

Can you please post the DISM log again please?

Thanks

Re: KB2919355 Update Win 8.1: failure to configure updates, reverting changes

Hi - has anyone got any clues as to why I can't update? I'm completely stuck as to why my machine won't update to Windows 8.1 update 1. I really don't want to have to re-image it, if it can be helped.

I am not able to install any updates now as Update 1 is mandatory for updates after that one.

Thanks!

To add, sfc /scannow is still not detecting any integrity violations.

Re: KB2919355 Update Win 8.1: failure to configure updates, reverting changes

Hello again LP

Really sorry the the delay here.

I ran this command on one of my boxes and ran into the same issue.

Lets try it another way.

Boot back with the CD -> go into the command prompt window

First command to enter is wmic logicaldisk get name. you will be given a similar output to:

Code:
X:\Sources>wmic logicaldisk get name
Name
C:
D:
E:
X:

Now when you are in the RE the drive letters will often move around. start with the first letter that was provided in the list and enter in the following command (for this example we will use C:\ as it is the first one)

dir C:\
-This will display all the folders in the root drive of C

Can you see a folder called C:\Windows in list?
-If you can see C:\Windows then run the DISM command as DISM /Image:C:\ /Cleanup-Image /RevertPendingActions

If you can not see the Windows folder move onto the next Drive letter that we obtained with wmic logicaldisk get name and type in dir <DRIVE LETTER> (replace <DRIVE LETTER> with the drive you would like to check), can you see the Windows Folder?
-If yes, enter in the following command DISM /Image:C:\ /Cleanup-Image /RevertPendingActions and changed the C to what ever Drive letter has the Windows folder

Its just a case of going through each drive letter that was produced from the first list until the Windows folder is found then run the DISM command on that drive

Re: KB2919355 Update Win 8.1: failure to configure updates, reverting changes

Hi GTP, no problem :) I was just getting worried I'd have to re-image my machine.

I found Windows on h: drive. So I ran the command with the following error message:

Image Version: 6.3.9600.16384

The scratch directory size might be insufficient to perform this operation. This can cause unexpected behaviour.
Use the /ScratchDir option to point to a folder with sufficient scratch space. The recommended size is at least 1024 MB.

Reverting pending actions from the image...
The operation completed. Revert of pending actions will be attempted after the reboot.
The operation completed successfully.

Thanks, LP.

Hello LP,

Are the updates working any better now?

Re: KB2919355 Update Win 8.1: failure to configure updates, reverting changes

Hello LP,

Are the updates working any better now?

Oh, I didn't try again because I thought the first part of the command hadn't run correctly due to the scratch file error I posted. I'll try the update again.

Thanks!

Re: KB2919355 Update Win 8.1: failure to configure updates, reverting changes

Hi GTP :-)

Nope, it's still the same. Still reverts changes. Any ideas? It almost completes and gets to 90+% but then reverts. I've attached my Windows Update log.

Thanks.

Re: KB2919355 Update Win 8.1: failure to configure updates, reverting changes

Hey LP,

I worked out why that error message appeared when trying to revert the pending actions, I got the same error my self when I ran a test. After some research I believe I have found for this command line to run successfully, but I am just double checking with some colleagues :)

hi Alex, sorry for the late reply! I've been away on holiday, back now :(

Is there a command you want me to try?

Thanks, LP

Re: KB2919355 Update Win 8.1: failure to configure updates, reverting changes

I signed up here just so I could pass on my recent research on this problem.
This update has been a problem for many since its release in April 2014 - I spent last week battling this issue on a customers laptop.

| see you have already tried most of the pre-installation cleanup steps to be found on various forums - in various combinations
But it might be worth following the suggested sequence (of pre-installation cleanup steps) in the following thread:

Windows 8.1 update fails to install - KB2919355 - See post marked as Answer by JonathanBaker_82
Windows 8.1 update fails to install - KB2919355 - Microsoft Community

You could also check this thread for additional suggestions and guidance:
KB2919355 issues - Compound Fix - Susan Bradley (MVP and Forum Moderator on Answers.Microsoft.com)
KB2919355 issues being tracked | Windows Secrets Lounge

And I see you already found the now notorious 116 page forum thread on the Microsoft Answers forum Re: KB2919355
KB2919355 (Windows 8.1 Update) Fails (800f0092 and - Microsoft Community

Best of luck - but unfortunately some (even with Microsoft Tech Support assistance) find that a re-install of Windows 8 is the only fix.
Make sure you update past KB2919355 before installing any applications or restoring your data - that way you save a lot of time if something does wrong.

Re: KB2919355 Update Win 8.1: failure to configure updates, reverting changes

Hi Alex/GTP,

Just wondering if there was another command/way you wish to try on this machine? :-)

Thanks - LP

Re: KB2919355 Update Win 8.1: failure to configure updates, reverting changes

Hi LP,

This command has only been tested on a VM, if you are happy to try it then you can give it a shot. The command should only be there to set a TEMP folder for the updates.

Re: KB2919355 Update Win 8.1: failure to configure updates, reverting changes

Yeah, I'll give it a whirl. Is that to be run from the recovery environment or command prompt within Windows 8.1?

Re: KB2919355 Update Win 8.1: failure to configure updates, reverting changes

Thanks. My drive has moved to I: now so I changed h: for I: in the commands. I could see that I:\scartch was created.

I get error 123
Unable to access the image
Make sure that the image path and the windows directory for the image exist and you have read permissions on the folder.

The DISM log file can be found at x:windows\logs\dism\dism.log

Re: KB2919355 Update Win 8.1: failure to configure updates, reverting changes

Hi all!
I think there's a typo in the command, i.e. Scartch-Dir should be ScratchDir (at least, in my win8.1 it shows ScratchDir):

Code:
mkdir H:\Scratch
DISM /Image:H:\ /ScratchDir:H\Scratch /Cleanup-Image /RevertPendingActions
