Windows 10 being pushed out to Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 users

I'm not completely sure about Windows 10 yet. If I do get Windows 10, I'll get a separate computer so I can keep my Windows 7 laptop.

I didn't even junk them, which is weird too. Installing the KB3035583 in one of my Windows 7 VM to see if it works without any issues.
 
As we used to say back in my old radio maintenance days, "FM"! That wasn't for "frequency modulation" but for a certain type of magic! ;)
 
Maybe I missed it in all of this but the specific question I have doesn't seem to be answered.

If I click the notification icon and reserve Windows 10, will Windows 10 still be downloaded to my machine if I uninstall the update that provides the notification or disable scheduled tasks/etc.? This is more to answer questions that others have. I personally have no issue with keeping the icon there.

I don't think that it will. If you check in your Task Scheduler, you'll see that there's a task that refreshes the GWX status, most likely to check if the download is available. Same for the XML file in the GWX folder that is set to false for the official release, download, etc. So if you uninstall the KB3035583, Windows 10 will not be downloaded on your system.
 
No problem :) However, I think that disabling the icon via the Task Scheduler will prevent it from automatically downloading Windows 10 because the refresh task is disabled as well. So I'll simply enable them back on July 27-28th so it can get the status and download Windows 10 on the 29th.
 
You may want to consider re-enabling a bit earlier than that, Aura, as my thoughts about the idea behind "reserving" a copy is to lessen the load on the download servers by sending out bits (and bytes) ahead of time so that by the 29th, it will merely be a matter of installing the upgrade. Of course, I could be completely wrong but it is worth considering.
 
Then I shall enable it back around the 20th just in case :P Personally, I could just re-enable it as a whole. The icon in the tray doesn't bother me. I mostly disabled it to test the work around while writing it and forgot to enable it after that.
 
I haven't received any kind of notification despite the system being fully updated. Any chance it might be because I am running the Windows 8.1 Pro Industry Embedded from Dreamspark?
 
I don't think that this edition of Windows 8.1 is elligible for the free upgrade since it's "embedded".

But, it is still Windows 8.1 Pro :p

I guess I will stick with this only if the free update doesn't come.
 
But it's also Industry Embedded :P Did you check if you have the KB3035583 installed? And the GWX folder in C:\Windows\System32?

No such folder and no such update is available and nor installed :(

I guess I would wait for some time and see if I get the notification. Else I would have to grab it from MSDN :|
 
You have MSDN, so it's all good :P If you search for Windows Updates manually, does it come up?

MSDN is a good option for people who want to do clean installation. I wonder if this edition from Dreamspark would support the Upgrade to Windows 10.

Nope, the update doesn't show up when manually searched for.

Since Dreamspark, and thus Windows 8.1 Pro Industry Embedded, is from your school, it appears that there will be a different path to upgrade available. From my post at Introducing Windows 10 Editions:

Windows 10 Education -- Builds on Windows 10 Enterprise, designed to meet the needs of schools – staff, administrators, teachers and students. This edition will be available through academic Volume Licensing. There will also be paths for schools and students using Windows 10 Home and Windows 10 Pro devices to upgrade to Windows 10 Education.
