[SOLVED] Windows 10 not updating

Ran SFCFix with the new zip file. It stalled again.

Accessed my computer using a linux OS. Archived the bad .dll file and encrypted it with a password for safekeeping (in case you wanted to see it). Copied the dll file from the new SFCFix.zip file into the correct file path on the computer.

Restarted and accessed computer using Windows 10. Verified the .dll file looked "fine" and it did. Ran SFCFix with the new zip file.

Ran SFCFix by itself. Detected no problems.

Ran windows update and it seems to have been successful! I am now on Version 21H2 (OS build 19044.1586). I was originally on Version 20H2 (OS Build 19042.746).

Ran CMD as Admin and ran sfc /scannow. Got to 76% complete and the message "Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation" appeared.

I would but I can’t boot into windows anymore. Every time it tries to boot into windows, it restarts or displays a Green screen stating one of these stop codes

KMODE EXCEPTION NOT HANDLED

PAGE FAULT IN NONPAGED AREA (ntfs.sys failed)

SYSTEM THREAD EXCEPTION NOT HANDLED (ntfs.sys failed)

NTFS FILE SYSTEM

Tried to boot into safe mode doesn’t work.

Automatic repairs don’t work though a log file was generated (SrtTrail.txt)

When viewing the drive in CMD, the drive and all files appear to be accessible.

Ran a basic RAM check and it seemed fine but will run “memtest” to make sure.

I’m also going to se if I can do a health check on the ssd to see if that’s failing.

Any other suggestions would be fantastic.

Thank you for your time,
Steve

I’m also going to se if I can do a health check on the ssd to see if that’s failing.
That's what I would have suggested. This is either due to some file system filter driver failing at boot or some kind of corruption with the file system itself. What tool/command are you using to check the health of the SSD?

I used a program called CrystalDiskInfo. It takes a drives S.M.A.R.T values and parses it into a easy to read format.

The drive looks good from what I see. A screenshot is attached to this post.

Edit: I should note I attached the drive to another computer externally. I also ran scanndisk and ended with the following message:

"Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them."

I have attached the CBS.Log file.

Connected the drive to the original computer to test it.

Continued to recieve green screens. Most of them stated "SYSTEM THREAD EXCEPTION NOT HANDLED". One of the green screens was just the stop code 0xc0000218.

Could not boot into safe mode.

I then tried "Uninstall last quality upgrade" and now the computer boots up. I now have access to my computer again.

Will hold on taking any more actions until you view the CBS log file.

Thanks again.

Ran Memtest86 and it failed. Not sure if it was the RAM that failed or the CPU (though the logfile indicates it is the ram).

Enclosed is a 7zip file of the log file and a HTML report.

Thank you, it most likely going to the RAM itself, since it is the test data which is becoming corrupt. I would replace the RAM and then run DISM again after it has been replaced so we can assess the corruption. At the moment, it seems like one file is corrupt, but it is best to have a fresh CBS log after the RAM replacement to ensure the log is accurate.

Hello.

Ran SFCFix by itself - Crashed when looking at the CBS log. I uploaded the log through the app.

Restarted the computer and ran it again. Same thing happened.

Ran scannow as admin - Verification 76% complete. Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation.

Ran DSIM as admin - 100%. The restore operation completed successfully. The operation completed successfully.

Ran SFCFix again - Crash.

Enclosed is CBS and DSIM log from computer.

Something is going on with my video now. Every approx. 5 minutes the screen goes black for a few seconds and then comes back. Sometimes it causes Chrome to crash. I have updated my video drivers but its still happening. Looking into it..

I would check to see if there is any dump files in the following directory:

It looks like SFC was able to repair those files? Could you please run SFC /scannow once more and then upload the log file if it fails?

The video refreshing isn't confined to chrome or web browsers. It seems to happen every few minutes. I would describe it as the same when you change video resolutions.

The folder "WATCHDOG" contains 4 dmp files. I have put them in a zip file below.

There is also a 2.3GB dmp file named "PoW32kWatchdog-20220218-0917.dmp". I can upload to Google Drive if needed.

Ran SFC /SCANNOW and it failed at 76%. I placed the cbs.log file in a zip file also.

Could you please upload it? I don't think they'll be too much useful information since it seems to be caused some reserved error thrown by your graphics stack. Are you using a resolution which is supported by the graphics card and monitor?

I'll have a look at the CBS log for you now.

SFCFix Script

Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.

 1. Download SFCFix.exe (by niemiro) and save this to your Desktop.
 2. Download the file below, SFCFix.zip, and save this to your Desktop. Ensure that this file is named SFCFix.zip - do not rename it.
 3. Save any open documents and close all open windows.
 4. On your Desktop, you should see two files: SFCFix.exe and SFCFix.zip.
 5. Drag the file SFCFix.zip onto the file SFCFix.exe and release it.
 6. SFCFix will now process the script.
 7. Upon completion, a file should be created on your Desktop: SFCFix.txt.
 8. Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of this file into your next post for me to analyse please - put

tags around the log to break up the text.

Afterwards, please run sfc /scannow again and attach the CBS log if it fails.

Ran SFC /SCANNOW. Stopped at 76%. CBS.log attached.

Ran Avast Uninstaller. I didn't think of it till later, but I believe I ran that tool about a month ago. I never installed it again. I still ran it in Windows Safe Mode. I also checked to make sure there was nothing running with Avast and there is not.

It looks like their drivers are still loading for some reason. Let's have a check with FRST64.

FRST Scan

1. Please download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your Desktop.
Note: You need to run the 64-bit Version so please ensure you download that one.
2. Right-click FRST64.exe and click Run as Administrator to run it as administrator. When the tool opens, click Yes to disclaimer.
3. Please ensure you place a check mark in the Addition.txt check box at the bottom of the form before running (if not already checked).
4. Press Scan button.
5. It will produce a log called FRST.txt in the same directory the tool is run from (which should now be the desktop)
6. Please attach the log back here.
7. Another log (Addition.txt - also located in the same directory as FRST64.exe) will be generated Please also attach that along with the FRST.txt in your reply.
