Windows 10 upgrade problem

Well, I somehow got my laptop all jacked up.
This happened due to the instructions in message #19 ?

Power down the machine completely, wait 1 minute and restart.
If that doesn't help, are you able to hook up the drive in this machine onto another working machine ?

No it’s my fault. I was messing around with trying to run pnpclean.dll. Powering down with battery removed and waiting 1 minute did not help.

I do have another machine that runs Windows 7 64 bit that I could connect my laptop HDD to.

Please do. Maybe we can extract a log from that drive.
Navigate to the folder X:\Windows\System32\winevt\Logs where the red X should be replaced by the drive of the broken machine.
You should see several files. Copy the file Application.evtx to your desktop.
Zip the copied file and attach it to your next reply.

Did you use Remote Desktop Connection on the broken machine ?

Can you tell me at what date and time did you get the login failure for the first time.

I don't see anything wrong around that time.
Open the folder X:\Windows\System32\winevt\Logs on the drive from the broken machine.
Make sure the most recent files are listed at the top.
Provide a screenshot of that.

Hi Peter,
Here is a screenshot of the directory contents.

Attach the file System.evtx to your next reply.

There might be a file missing called "app_updater.exe" which can be part of Free Studio by DVDVideoSoft. Is that or something similar installed on the broken machine ?

Hi Peter.
I found a DVDVideoSoft directory in E:\Users\Gordon\AppData\Roaming\ but there is no file with the name "app_updater.exe". DVDVideoSoft was a Youtube MP3 converter that I had tried out but was soon uninstalled. I think this DVDVideoSoft directory is just some remnant left over after uninstalling the program. I found no DVDVideoSoft or Free Sudio under Program Files or Program Data.

That can be it and should not affect the Windows logon.

I also found some Avast services that having a problem getting started.
Not sure if this causes the logon failure or are the result of the logon failure.
This goes beyond my knowledge so I suggest you start a new thread in the Windows 7 forum.
Post a link to this thread in your initial post so other helpers know what already has been done.
Return back to this thread when you can login into Windows again.
