[SOLVED] Windows 7 64-bit Service Pack1 KB976932 Installation Failure, Error Code: 800736B3

Configure your computer for clean boot, then try installing SP1 from the exe you downloaded.
When it fails, zip up and attach C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log and C:\Windows\inf\setupapi.dev.log

Clean Boot

  1. Click the Start button, then type msconfig in the search box.
  2. Click msconfig in the results list.

Will try that on Monday. Heading out of town for a long weekend bike ride.

Thanks very much for the help so far. :smile9:

1. Download the Sysnative BSOD Dump + System File Collection App - save to Documents folder -
https://www.sysnative.com/apps/SysnativeBSODCollectionApp.exe

2. Run the app - Double-click on the downloaded EXE file
Output = new folder created in Documents + a zipped version -- SysnativeFileCollectionApp + SysnativeFileCollectionApp.zip

3. Attach the new zip file (SysnativeFileCollectionApp.zip) with your reply. If it is too large to attach, upload to a file sharing service such as OneDrive, DropBox, SendSpace, etc. and include the link.

Do you have your subscription information for Avast! ?

Does your machine happen to be overclocked?

I am running the free version of Avast, which is currently disabled.

The machine is not overclocked to my knowledge, but I am not sure of past history (inherited the mechine from daughter-in-law).

Your computer's specs look normal.

Please try temporarily uninstalling Avast!
Also rename the following directory: C:\Windows\System32\DriverStore\FileRepository\usbvideo.inf_amd64_neutral_23bfbf6f668380d6\ to something like usbvideo.inf_amd64_neutral_23bfbf6f668380d6.old

You may have to take ownership of the directory before renaming it:

Modify File/Folder Permissions

  1. Navigate to the following folder, right-click on it and select Properties:

    C:\Windows\System32\DriverStore\FileRepository\usbvideo.inf_amd64_neutral_23bfbf6f668380d6\

  2. Under the Security tab, click Advanced.
  3. Under the Owner tab, click Edit.
  4. Click "Other Users and Groups".
  5. Click Advanced.
  6. Click "Find Now".
  7. Scroll down and double click on Everyone.
  8. Click OK THREE times.
  9. Click on the Permissions tab.
  10. Under type Deny, single click on any entries and click Remove. (There may not be any Deny entries, in which case just ignore this step. Just remove any that do exist)
  11. Click OK.
  12. Click Edit (now on the standard file Property window under the Security tab).
  13. Click Add.
  14. Click Advanced.
  15. Click "Find Now".
  16. Scroll down and double click on Everyone.
  17. Click OK.
  18. Single click on Everyone and then tick the "Full Control" box under Allow.
  19. Click OK TWO times.

After these steps, attempt to install SP1 again using the offiline installer.

Okay... after much trouble trying to gain permission to rename the referenced file (ended up giving permissions on the FileRepository folder) I was successful. The SP1 update still fails though, unfortunately. See the attached images for more info.

Thanks.

Did your computer come with a Windows 7 disc or did you have to burn recovery media?

    https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/12354842/My Tools/ListChkdskResult.exe
  6. Double click on it to run it. It will take a few seconds to scan, then it will open a Notepad window with the log. Copy and paste the contents of this into your next post.

Does the computer reboot to perform the installation or does it fail before that? How long would you estimate it takes between running the SP1 installer and the error message?

If you check System in the Control Panel, does it show the Acer logo and support information?

Just tried the SP1 install again. It failed after 20 minutes, and approximately 2/3 of the way through. No reboot was peformed.

See the attachment for the System info in Control panel.system info.JPG
