[SOLVED] Windows 7 64 bit SP1, Windows Update not working Error 0x80070002

I ran the SURT then restarted computer, checked for updates and it checked, took longer than normal, the pop up box on bottom right of desktop came up about installing updates as normal as this time and date and the windows update just came back with the red cross again but im being told windows updates are ready to be installed. :confused2:

Hi Matty,

Can you post the SURT log please:

Hi Matty,

You have 4040 errors remaining in your log which is simply too many to fix I'm afraid. The repaired COMPONENTS hive allowed the System Update Readiness Tool to run but, unfortunately, it has shown us many more problems on your computer.

Due to the extent of the corruption and various other errors, including your BSOD issues, I think the only way forward is to do a clean install:

Sorry I couldn't have been of more help, there is simply no way to do this.

No worries, started to look that way, i backed most of my files up on an external hard drive, just a pain reinstalling programs again, probably upgrade computer at the end of the year/early next anyway with a budget of around £400-£500, want to play games like crysis 3.

Hi Matty,

Give me a shout if you need a hand with the reinstallation, but it sounds like you know your way around a computer.

If you ever want some advice or a recommendation, then start a thread over in the hardware forum: Hardware

Windows 7 has been reinstalled, a few programs installed just have to reinstall Itunes and all my music again and games on my Steam account which will take some time, computer crashed only twice so far but nothing too bad and seems a bit more stable, downloaded quite a few updates already, at one point i had 135 updates to be installed when shutting down haha, Net framework client 4 installed without no problems this time. I think i just need to do service pack one yet then reactivate windows 7 but going wait till im satisfied computer is running as it should, then delete the windows.old folder, but so far so good.

Hi Matty,

Thanks for posting back; glad to hear things are looking a lot better.

Your computer shouldn't be crashing at all after a clean install, I would highly recommend that you post over in the BSOD forum and they will sort you out. It is very likely that you have hardware issues due to the crashing and the magnitude of the corruption that was in your registry.

Well the crashes to me looked like it was pointing to a graphic problem but i could be wrong. Anyway i have not had any other BSOD since i installed a new graphics and swapped out my RAM and put in more RAM. Maybe that was the problem. So the fresh install corrected the windows and other update problems and the new graphics card (ASUS Gefore GT 640 DDR3 2GB) and RAM sorted out the BSOD issue(s) ?

I did notice when i took my old graphics card out it was in its slot okay but i did not screw it in at the back of the pc and maybe the weight of the card was probably making it bend slightly down or it could of been a faulty stick of ram? i took one stick of 2gb DDR3 RAM out and put in a 4gb stick to bring it up to 6gb on my motherboard (recently upgraded again to 8gb)

Not had any problems since thankfully and just reactivated my copy of Windows 7 64 bit before the 30 day finished when i was satisfied everything is ok.

Thanks for all the replies.

Hi Matty,

That's great news, thanks for posting back! Best of luck for the future but you're only a few clicks away if you run into any problems :)
