Honestly, this could be the issue. This error code is related to your BIOS settings (UEFI, Legacy/CMS, Secure Boot) and also your partitions. I wouldn't be surprised if Windows have an issue upgrading when there's another OS installed on the drive. Personally, I had a similar error on my desktop (the Recovery Environment partition couldn't be created), and I had to wipe my SSD, convert it to GPT and unplug my two hard drives to get it to install. It took me 3 evenings (because I tried to upgrade like 10 times using different methods and settings each time) to finally upgrade to Windows 10 :P Also, your GRUB might be removed by the upgrade so you would have to reinstall it.
 
is it able to delete the ubuntu partition and restore the bootloader into windows only from within windows 7?
 
I know you can delete the Ubuntu partition from within Windows 7 (you just have to go in the Windows Disk Management console and delete the partition), and I'm sure it's the same for the bootloader too (since it should be another partition).
 
If you are using GRUB to load Windows, you won't be able to boot back. You would have to boot in the Recovery Environment from an installation media and run the bootrec /fixboot command to recreate the MBR.
 
How do I merge the ubuntu partition that I have deleted and now showed up as "free space"?

Some website mentioned to select partition left-hand-side to the "free space" and select extend volume. However, for my case the 'extend volume' option is not available.

  • Enter SnippingTool and press on Enter;
