I am unable to install the last batch of updates that came out ofr windows 7.
up until the previous batch stuff worked out.

After the failures I studdied the logs under CBS performed (4 times) the whole scf /scan now || SURT checks 7 repairs dance.

found some errors, I copied some missing ( maybe corrupt ones as well cant recall for sure) files from a Win7 computer that worked without problems.
Some problesm got repaired, but some werent.
Used the proccess described here:
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/2700601/how-to-fix-errors-found-in-the-checksur-log

Got borred doing it manually and used a slightly moddifed version of a Powershell script that tries to automate the process( from here:
Windows 7 - Component Store Corruption Repair - Script Center - Spiceworks

that wasa a month ago, I decided to come back to the probelm today.

followed the instructions in the forums here,

SFC Scan | SURT/DISM Scan | SFCFix

Some stuff didnt get repaired so posting this.

Attaching the SCCFix log,

the CBS logs are here as they are ~40MBs:
Firefox Send

Thanks in Advance for the Effort.

The Updates reported as needed and failing to install are 2:
The "2020-01 Security Monthly Quality Rollup for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB4534310)"
The "2017-10 Security Monthly Quality Rollup for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB4041681)"

These updates also fail when I try to run them manually after downloading them.

Hello there!

Please run the System Update Readiness Tool again, I'd like a fresh SURT log to see which files still need to be repaired after your fixes.

System Update Readiness Tool (SURT)

Download and run the System Update Readiness Tool for your version of Windows here: System Update Readiness Tool

NOTE: If you aren't sure if your Windows installation is 32-bit or 64-bit, check here: How to determine whether a computer is running a 32-bit version or 64-bit version of the Windows operating system

This tool will take some time to complete - when it has finished, attach C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log with your reply.

I had literallyjust run SURt, but run it again just in case. You can find the log attached.

thanks for your help

  1. Download SFCFix.exe (by niemiro) and save this to your Desktop.
  2. Download the file below, SFCFix.zip, and save this to your Desktop. Ensure that this file is named SFCFix.zip - do not rename it.
  3. Save any open documents and close all open windows.
  4. On your Desktop, you should see two files: SFCFix.exe and SFCFix.zip.
  5. Drag the file SFCFix.zip onto the file SFCFix.exe and release it.
  6. SFCFix will now process the script.
  7. Upon completion, a file should be created on your Desktop: SFCFix.txt.
  8. Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of this file into your next post for me to analyse please - put [CODE][/CODE] tags around the log to break up the text.

Excellent. Go ahead and run SURT again after the reboot to verify it doesn't detect any additional corruptions.

If SURT doesn't report any problems, then I'd like to see what SFC finds.

SFC Scan

  1. Click on the Start
    Start%20Orb.jpg
button and in the search box, type Command Prompt
  2. When you see Command Prompt on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator
  3. When command prompt opens, copy and paste the following commands into it, press enter after each

    sfc /scannow

Wait for this to finish before you continue

    copy %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log %userprofile%\Desktop\cbs.txt

  4. This will create a file, cbs.txt on your Desktop. Please zip and attach this to your next post.

SURT didint find any errors, run sfc /scannow

cbs.log compressed and attached.
Last run is at line 18800 or so (a bit before 21:30 local time)

Looks like a few repairs were made. Go ahead and restart, then check for Windows Updates. If any are offered, choose one and attempt to install it.
If the update fails, zip and attach the CBS log.

Tried Windows Update after this and it failed again, with Error 80072EFD, attaching the latest version of the cbs.log,.
Again thanks for the help!

Also : for some reason, the forum didnt show me your reply, till I repleid myself, Then it became visible.

Looks like error 0x80072EFD is referencing connectivity to Microsoft's Windows Update servers. Is this machine part of a domain using WSUS or do you use a proxy or vpn to connect to the internet?

No it is on a home network, a small workgroup with 6 computers, the rest connect to Windows Update servers without a problem.
Also no Proxy Or VPN.

And I can install other ( non-Core-Windows) updates on this very same PC.
I installed an update for dot.net (KB4041083) , the usual Security updates for MS security essentials and the windows Malicious Software Removal tool these past 3 days.

Let's try resetting the Windows Update components. Note that this will clear the recent update history, and that the first check for updates will take a very long time.

Run Windows Repairs
  1. Download Windows Repair (All-in-One) Portable to your desktop.
  2. Once the file is downloaded, right-click on the file on your desktop and choose Extract All...
    Extract.JPG
  3. Keep the defaults and click the Extract button.
  4. A folder named tweaking.com_windows_repair_aio will be extracted to the desktop. Once the extraction is complete the folder will open.
  5. Inside this folder, there is a folder named Tweaking.com - Windows Repair. Open this folder as well.
    Capture.JPG

  6. Double-click on Repair_Windows.exe to open. Note: Please make sure all of your programs are closed and anything you were working on is saved as we will be rebooting.
  7. When the program opens, click the Reboot to Safe Mode button at the bottom of the screen. Answer Yes to allow.
  8. Once rebooted into Safe Mode, open the program again. When the program opens, click the Repairs tab and click the Open Repairs button.
  9. A backup of your registry will be made. After a few moments you will have many options from which you can choose.
  10. Please click the Unselect All button and then click to enable only the following ones:

    17 - Repair Windows Updates

[*]Ensure the Restart check box is selected and click the Start Repairs button in the lower right of the screen. This may take some time to run so be patient.
    StartRepairsWithReboot.JPG

[*]Once the fixes are complete you will be prompted to restart your machine. Answer Yes.

Once the computer has restarted, wait a few minutes for everything to initialize then try checking for updates again.

Which update is being offered that produces the error? Let's see if we can download it from the Update Catalog.

Back sory for vanishing but this has ebeen the week from hell, I've been desginated the person respinsible for setting up and organising remote work due to Coronavirus in my Org and I;m swamped...

Re my update woes.

After runnign the Windows Repair (All-in-One) Portable and rebooting I havent been able to run windows updates at all. If i run the Windows Update applet from Control panel it almost immediately throws an error .

here is the relevant part of the WindowsUpdate.log:

But it let me offline install one of the two updates that were constantly hanging, that being the 2020-02 update (KB4539601), havent tried the other one (that being the 2017-09 update IIRC).

I'd tried installing it 4-5 times before by using the offline installer ( msu) but it had always failed.

TLDR: windows update fails before even bringin up the list of updates to install but it let me install the cumulative update from last February.

Strange!

If you run regedit and browse to
Code:
HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\Connections
are there any subkeys or values present?

Good luck with that, and no worries about delays.

yes there are 4 values present.
2 correspond to old VPN settings I'v deleted since 2 years ago when I left my old Job.
2 others are:
DefaultConnectionSettings
SavedLegacySettings

Should I delete Them All? just the 2 VPNs?

Again thanks for the help.

Export the entire Connections key ( right click, choose Export, then give it a name and save somewhere convenient ) then go ahead and delete only the VPN entries leaving DefaultConnectionSettings and SavedLegacySettings.

Once complete, restart your computer and try checking for updates again.
