Windows 8.0 x64; Image Version: 6.2.9200.16384; Corruption; Please help

Q1; Would you consider this online Win OS image as "clean"?
Reboot the machine, run the command sfc /scannow again and provide a screenshot of the result.

Good afternoon PeterJ

>Completed ACTIONS per your Post#41; INSTRUCTIONS; Reboot the machine, run the command sfc /scannow again and provide a screenshot of the result.

Verification 100% complete.

Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired
them. Details are included in the CBS.Log windir\Logs\CBS\CBS.log. For
example C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log. Note that logging is currently not
supported in offline servicing scenarios.

Please share back your thoughts/conclusions.

BTW, is there a sysnative forum where I might be able to get some expert help with a Task Scheduler Task issue?

Thanks again,
Steve

Provide the file C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\cbs.log as attachment.

BTW, is there a sysnative forum where I might be able to get some expert help with a Task Scheduler Task issue?
Please explain the issue in more detail.

Hi PeterJ

REF Post#42; "....help with a Task Scheduler Task issue?"

REF Post#43; "Please explain the issue in more detail."

Post#44; >Task Scheduler\Library\Microsoft\Windows\WS\License Validation;
>For a few years (1st noticed issues in EVENTVWR); eg "Unexpected Node in XML"; Deleting & reimporting Task Validation.xml failed.
>C:\Windows\System32\Tasks\Microsoft\Windows\WS\Task Validation (& a Copy as Task Validation.xml)
>I've browsed around internet & downloaded several versions of supposedly "clean Task Validation files" but seems none are for Win8.0.
>Since we never got a "Win8 CD" with the PC, no option to extract a replacement in that way.
>At various times trying to "delete" & then "reimport" the task I've seen crazy errors like "Task alreay exists" etc.
>Currently, the WS folder in the Library has 4 Tasks as follows (those 4 seem to be working as intended);
>Badge Update
>Sync Licenses
>WSRefreshBannedAppsListTasks
>WSTask
>The "Source files for those 4 Tasks in the WS folder under System32\Tasks" all show a TIMESTAMP=7/26/2012 4:14 AM;
>Meanwhile the License Validaion file in that folder now shows 7/25/2021 9:02 PM; 5070bytes
(I used that one (for Win8.1?) in ERROR it SEEMS to replace prior one showing 10/16/2018 3:02 AM; 3962bytes)
>Browsing, found suggestion to run a POWERSHELL CMD=schtasks /query; Did so & saved output to File=CMD_ADMIN;PS;schtasks.txt
>Q1; So, I'm seeking help to get the License Validation TASK mess cleaned up & working properly before SAVING a Win8 OS System Image.

REF Post#42; "Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them."
>"Found corrupt files and successfully repaired them." sort of surprised me.
>Took a look at CBS - Copy (55);220220_1444;AfterSFCscannow.log; See some lines re "ErrorReporting". ATTACHED it here as CBS.log.
>Q2; Do you see any evidence there of "which corrupt files today's SFC /scannnow run fixed?" Has all "corruption" now been fixed?

FYI, please find these files
ATTACHED=CMD_ADMIN;PS;schtasks.txt AS SchTasks.txt
ATTACHED=CBS - Copy (55);220220_1444;AfterSFCscannow.log AS CBS.log

Please share back your thoughts/responses to Qs?

Thanks again,
Steve

Happy Presidents Day (wherever you are)

FYI, I MAY have found a solution to my License Validation issue in Task Scheduler....

>Realized I had downloaded a couple of .ISOs for Win8; Just had no skills to now which were/were not suitable for me to use as SOURCES to patch my 15r online Win8 OS IMAGE.

>Last few hours, recalled I had months ago EXTRACTED the install.wim file from this Win8x64iso; Until today, never taught myself how to "open it to browse & extract the contents.

>Moments ago, I accomplished that task and EXTRACTED/SAVED the whole TREE=Win8x64iso\C:\Windows\System32\Tasks\Microsoft\Windows\WS

>Took a peek in Win8x64iso\C:\Windows\System32\Tasks\Microsoft\Windows\WS and found ALL FIVE (5) files (including License Validation) showing DATE=7/26/2012_0414. SEEMs that is the file I now need to copy into 15r\C:\Windows\System32\Tasks\Microsoft\Windows\WS and then IMPORT as .xml into the TaskScheduler.

Hopefully, you see this note BEFORE you spent much time dealing with my "issue explanation" in my prior Post#44

Your thoughts/suggestions please???

Thanks,
Steve

Good afternoon PeterJ

>Firstly, thanks very much for your help with this Thread

>Thanks for the kudos re my apparent progress getting myself a solution for the License Validation Task issue; Hoping to get that fixed today.

>Q1; Presuming I get that fixed, and given what we have done/where things stand, would you consider the current 15r online Win8 OS image "corrupt

free enough" A) to save as "a clean archive IMAGE"? & B) to support problem-free "Upgrading to Win8.1" via WindowsUpdate KB2919355?

>Q2; More broadly, "if you were me working on 15r", would you set objective to "upgrade online Win OS" to 1) Win8.1 OR 2) Win10?

>Q3; IF 1) &/or IF 2), what steps would you conduct to accomplish that objective (with minimal risk of problems)?

Understand you are busy but after reading many many Threads with differing "advice", I'm not at all confident in my ability to "choose the best steps" so LOOK FORWARD to your thoughts/recommendations re Q1, Q2, & Q3.

Many Thanks,
Steve

As the machine is running Windows 8, I assume it is almost 10 years old. Not sure it will support Windows 10.
Windows 8.1 is almost end of life so I would skip Windows 8.1 and go for Windows 10.
Some useful information on upgrading Windows 8 to 8.1 can be found here: Update to Windows 8.1 from Windows 8
The system requirements for Windows 10 can be found here: How to Check Windows 10 Computer System Specs & Requirements - Microsoft

Another option is to keep this machine on Windows 8 and buy a new one with Windows 10/11.

Good Monday morning PeterJ

>Thanks for comments/suggestions in your Post#48 of 2/22/2022.

>Sorry for my delayed REPLY; Had to deal with some other issues...and do some more research re "options/tradeoffs/risk assessment re upgrading from Win8.0"

>Today, my goals here are a) Fix the License Validation task in TASK SCHEDULER & b) Save an DISK IMAGE with the "as cleaned-up online Windows8.0 OS".

>I will keep you posted (though perhaps not daily). Hope that's ok with you.

Thanks again,
Steve
