[SOLVED] Windows could not search for new updates

Hi Fred,

Is the backslash key on the same key as the W key? if it is can you press the fn button then the w key?

No it's on the bottom left next to the Z it's a key with | \ but whatever I try it just keeps putting a W. I did a search on Google and found it could be because I chose UK English and no USA English, but I tried that too and it gave the same result.

No matter what key I try I just can't find a \

Don't know if it's anything to do with it but if I try say a forward slash it throws out a load of Japanese, I'm sorry Alex bet you wish I hadn't come here.

Fred.

Hi all!

Fredpc, try to:
- ALT GR + Z
Press (and keep it pressed) the ALT GR key (it's usually the ALT on the right side of the keyboard), then press the Z key.
- ALT GR + SHIFT + Z
Press (and keep it pressed) both the ALT GR key (it's usually the ALT on the right side of the keyboard) and the shift key (left or right shouldn't matter), then press the Z key.
And tell us what happens.

Thanks xilolee :)

Not at all you doing good.

Alex

Hello again @xilolee thank you but it didn't produce anything.

I've been searching around and though I thought I was putting in a W when hitting \ it was actually putting in a W with a line through it. I also noticed where you say it will look like this :\Sources> it has the W with the line instead of the \ if that makes sense.

Anyway I kept trying and it seemed just pushing the \ created the W with a line and it came up with a list like you said. but each one just produces a load of Japanese characters.

I went ahead and tried the DISM command for each one even though I could understand it, but it's made no difference and the update window is now telling me I need to update the windows updater. When I click Install it starts downloading, but then goes back to the original problem "Windows could not search for new update"

The computer is working fine but it's just this problem that's becoming annoying, should I just turn off updates and forget about it?

When you were changing the language at the start were you changing Language or Keyboard input? If it wasn't the keyboard option can you try changing inside here to United States.

If that doesn't work can you please do the following:

First, start an Elevated Command Prompt: https://www.sysnative.com/forums/wind...vista-7-a.html
and copy and paste in the following:

fsutil resource setautoreset true %SystemDrive%\

attrib -r -s -h %SystemRoot%\System32\Config\TxR\*
del %SystemRoot%\System32\Config\TxR\*

attrib -r -s -h %SystemRoot%\System32\SMI\Store\Machine\*
del %SystemRoot%\System32\SMI\Store\Machine\*.tm*
del %SystemRoot%\System32\SMI\Store\Machine\*.blf
del %SystemRoot%\System32\SMI\Store\Machine\*.regtrans-ms

Try windows update again, if it fails please continue.

Please go navigate to C:\Windows\winsxs and copy any files with a similar name to pending.xml (e.g. pending.xml, pending.xml.bad, pending.xml_dfsadf78 etc.) to your folder on the Desktop [there may not be any, just if there are].

Hello Alex

#1 I tried language but it's still the same.

#2 I run the Elevated Command Prompt and it said "The process can not access as it's being used by another"

#3 I've tried update and it's still the same.

#4 I went to C:\Windows\winsxs and there are no pending.xml There are however one named "PendingRename" in temp and one named "Pending.GRL" in AMD64-microsoft-windows-mf.

Regards.

Hi Fred,

I was hoping for something to be inside the TX log, but there were none running. I will have to take a further look into this for you later on.

Thanks

Alex it looks like you've done it. :beerchug2:

I ran the command, then the update.

First time it installed (19 Important 163 MB ) & ( 6 Optional 161 MB )

I checked again and it installed ( 9 Important 149 MB ) & ( 2 Optional 14 MB )

I checked again and it installed ( 1 Important 1.8 MB )

Checked again and it said Windows Is Up To Date.

Hello Alex, I wanted to say thank you very much for being so patient and getting this sorted for me. I really appreciate it and I'm going to see if I can get someone to do a donation for me as I don't have a card myself.

Sorry I can't repay by helping others on Sysnative but it's way over my head, so once again than you very much.

Regards.

Fred.

Your welcome Fred. Thanks for offering a donation, I hope you feel no obligation to give one.

No worries about not being able to help other users, the volunteers here enjoy working on computer issues thats why we do it :)
