Windows Media Center Scheduler Service constantly stops

Hi Tomas,

It is not solved yet. I checked this morning to see if Windows Media Center Scheduler was running. It was not so I started it. I recorded 10 minutes of a show with no problem. The scheduler started up when I scheduled the recording. That was encouraging. So I tried it again. I stopped the service and scheduled a recording for an hour later. It did not record the program. Checked services and the service was not running.

Peace,
Mike

Hi Mike,

Could you please repeat the procedure with Process Monitor again? Also, please export and attach Administrative log (the way you did it before) and Media Center log (Applications and Services Logs -> Media Center).

Hi Mike,

I still see \\ABCDEFG-PC in the ProcMon log. Do you think you could export HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Media Center\Service\Recording registry key (open RegEdit, navigate to this key on the left side, right click on it, select Export) and attach it here?

In addition, I really don't like the following events in the Administrative log:

Disk Errors.JPG

Could you please make a screenshot (press WIN+R, type diskmgmt.msc, maximize the window opened to be sure all the disks on the bottom are visible) of Disk Management? I want to be sure if all these disks are the USB ones. If they indeed are and you a recording files to them, it might be possible that recording gets interrupted after an issue is detected with the disk (this might happen for few different reasons, e.g. having to many USB devices without enough power).

You got everything right, thanks.

So, for the registry, please extract and import (by double-clicking) this file into the registry - View attachment WatchFolder_Fix.zip. It should remove that \\ABCDEFG-PC\Users\Public\Recorded TV\ record.

As for the disk error, seems they are for the USB disks. Anyhow, it's hard to say what can be causing them (it can be that there's not enough power, controller issues or the drivers). Do you think you could try recording something to C:\ drive instead of L:\ to see if it works?

Thanks Tomas,

The fix worked. I checked - it replaced the bad key. I move my Record TV to the C drive and recorded one program right away and then scheduled a recording while I was asleep. Both or them recorded and the service has continued to run. Now I'm trying to record back to my old USB and see what happens. I'll let you know the outcome later today.

Peace,
Mike

OK,

I tried to record overnite some programs to the C drive. Nothing was recorded. I made drive L the default TV Recorded again. So it is still not working.

Peace,
Mike

Is it possible for this to related for some network issues? Have these issues started after you changed something? At the moment, it doesn't seem the issues are coming from WMC side, since recording works sometimes. I would guess something else is interrupting them randomly.

Hi Tomas,

My L drive is an external USB hard drive that is without its own power source. It has been a while since I removed it from my computer and hooked it up to one of my Hubs. I have now reconnected it directly to my computer. I tried to record two different TV programs by scheduling them. Neither one of them was recorded. I then checked the registry key that you gave me the fix for. The ABCDEFG-PC key is back. I then checked to see if the service was running - it is. I used your fix to get rid of ABCDEFG-PC key. I scheduled a couple of programs to record - they were recorded. So I scheduled a couple of recording for overnite. I' let you know tomorrow.

Peace,
Mike

So, if I understood you correctly, what happening is:

  • You remove ABCDEFG-PC value from the registry
  • Recording works fine
  • Then somehow this value gets update again in the registry
  • Recording no longer works
Correct? If so, please try this few times to be absolutely sure it's not just coincidence.

Hi Tomas,

That definitely seems to be the pattern. Today after fixing bad key, scheduled recording for 10. It did not record - checked service, it was running but bad key was back. Fixed bad key and scheduled recording for 11:15 it worked -but bad key again - fix bad key and scheduled recording for 2pm - only recorded for 7 mins, bad key again and service had stopped. Fix bad key and service was running. I scheduled recording for 8:15pm - did not record - service running but bad key again. I fixed bad key once more and service was still running.

Peace,
Mike
