Hello,

After some days trying different things, I wa snot able to solve my issue.

the issue:

windows server 2016 in an hyper-v VM OS build 14393.5127

updates for servicing stack regularly installed, no issue on those, latest one from june installed.

Cumulative OS updates get installed without apparent errors but when rebooted it goes to 99% and then rollsback "undoing changes"

what I have done:

reset windows update (stopping services and renaming the needed folders)
done sfc /scannow --> no errors
done Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth --> opertion completed successfully
downloaded the june24,may24 and december23 cumulative udpates and tried manual install --> rollback on reboot
checked space on c: >9gb available
dism.exe /online /cleanup-image /startcomponentcleanup --> see attached log
stopped word wide web publishing service -->no changes
checked if other than defender antivisrus was installed --> no other antivirus
run the component scanner --> Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations

this server is also SCCM server and it would be a pain in the sorry, I would like to avoid having to rebuild it, so any help is appreciated.

Thanks

Lybra

Hi and welcome to Sysnative,

Step 1. Upload a copy of the CBS folder
  • Open Windows Explorer and browse to the C:\Windows\Logs folder.
  • Right-click on the CBS folder and choose Send to > Compressed (zipped) folder.
  • Now the message will appear, "Windows cannot create the Compressed (zipped) Folder here. Do you want it to be placed on the desktop instead?"
  • Click on the Yes button here.

  • Attach the file CBS.zip to your next reply. If the file is too large to attach, upload the CBS.zip file to www.wetransfer.com and post the link in your next reply.

Step 2. Download and run SetupDiag from Microsoft
  • Download

    SetupDiag to your desktop.
  • Right-click on SetupDiag.exe and select Run as administrator.
  • When completed the following files are created: "Logs.zip, SetupDiag.exe.config and SetupDiagResults.log"
  • Attach SetupDiagResults.log and Logs.zip to your next reply.

Hello,

thanks for your help.

Sorry, I just uploaded the single CBS file, my mistake, here is the full zipped folder.

regarding the setupdiag, when launched it exits immediately and no files are generated, I tried do move it in a temp folder, but still same result...
Tried SetupDiag.exe /verbose /Output:C:\temp\ and got the attached file (it also generated another file named SetupDiag.exe.config)

hope these will help

Are you able to free up more space, at least 20 ~ 25 GB?

Please provide the latest CBS logs, the DISM log is not very helpful in such cases. Provide also a copy of the COMPONENTS hive.

Upload your COMPONENTS hive.
  • Navigate to C:\Windows\System32\Config and locate the COMPONENTS file.
  • Please copy this file to your desktop.
  • Note: If you receive an error that this file is in-use, simply reboot your computer and try again.
  • Right-click on this file on your desktop and select Send To > Compressed (zipped) folder. This will create a file named COMPONENTS.ZIP on your desktop.
  • If the file is too large to upload here, upload the file to www.wetransfer.com and post the link in your next reply.

Please run the following DISM command again and post the result. If it fails attach a new copy of the CBS log.
Code:
DISM /online /cleanup-image /RestoreHealth

Please run the following command only and copy and paste the result in your next post.
Code:
DISM /online /cleanup-image /AnalyzeComponentStore

Let's see if the following command failes again with Error 2.
Code:
DISM /online /cleanup-image /StartComponentCleanup

The Force knows why, but this time no error... quite curious to know what changed in the meantime

13GB , copying the june cumulative update (around 1,g Giga) waiting your go for installation

Yes, please try to install the update again and post the result. If it fails attach a new copy of the CBS logs.

Again, installed, rebooted, gone to 99% and then "we couldn't complete the updates Undoing changes"

attached the new cbs folder
